Biography

William Pennington was born about 1791 in Lancashire, England.

He married Jenny (or Jane) Banks on 28 Jan 1816 in the parish of Winwick, Lancashire. The witnesses were Thomas Walker and Peter Ridyard.[1]

Their eldest child, John, was born on 3 Jun 1816 and christened on 23 Jun 1816 at Ashton Chapel in the parish of Winwick (which later became St Thomas' Church in the new parish of Ashton in Makerfield in 1845). His father's occupation was recorded as nailor, and the family's address as Ashton.[2]

Their son William was born on 3 Jun 1820, and christened on 1 Jan 1821 at Ashton Chapel. His father's occupation was recorded as nailor, and the family's address as Ashton.[3]

Their daughter Mary Maria was born on 1 Apr 1822, and christened on 12 Aug 1822 at Ashton Chapel. Her father's occupation was recorded as nailor, and the family's address as Ashton.[4]

Their daughter Susanna was born on 23 Jan 1825, and christened on 13 Mar 1825 at Ashton Chapel. Her father's occupation was recorded as nailor, and the family's address as Ashton.[5]

Their son Thomas was born on 24 Feb 1828, and christened on 6 Apr 1828 at Ashton Chapel. His father's occupation was recorded as nailmaker, and the family's address as Long Lane in Ashton.[6]

Their daughter Eliza was born on 13 Mar 1830, and christened on 22 Mar 1830 at Ashton Chapel. Her father's occupation was recorded as nailmaker, and the family's address as Long Lane in Ashton.[7]

Their daughter Betsy was born on 29 Apr 1834, and christened on 22 Jun 1834 at Ashton Chapel. Her father's occupation was recorded as nailmaker, and the family's address as Long Lane in Ashton.[8]

In the 1841 England census, William Pennington (45) was living in Winwick, Lancashire, with wife Jane Pennington (45), and children John (25), William (20), Susannah (15), Thomas (13), Eliza (10) and Betsy (7).[9]

William died in 1847, and was buried on 26 May 1847 at St Oswald's Church in Winwick, Lancashire. His age was recorded as 56, and his address as Ashton.[10]

Research Notes

He died before 1851, as in the 1851 census, his wife was listed as widowed. In 1851, Jane Pennington (57) and Thomas Pennington were living in Ashton in Makerfield, Lancashire.[11][12]

His wife's name was recorded as Jane in the baptisms of the first six children; in Betsy's baptism, it was Jenny, matching the marriage record. I've seen Jenny used before as a nickname for Jane in records (-Morris-18630)
