Porter was born in Palmer, Massachusetts, about 1811, the son of Thomas and Lucretia (Magoon) Pepper. (His age at the time of his death - 52 years, 2 months and 12 days - would indicate he was born about November 15, 1811.) Research Dan Hamilton offers of theory on Porter's lack of a birth record on Hamilton's blog: John Hamilton of Charlestown.
He married Persis Dearth, daughter of Thomas and Mehitable (Bliss) Dearth, in Brimfield, Mass., in 1833.[1] They lived at Brimfield, where Porter was shoemaker.[2]
He died in Brimfield in 1864, at the age of 52 years.[3]
