Disproven marriage

Alice Pepper was for many years named as the wife of immigrant Joseph Clarke.[1] [2]It has since been shown that Joseph married Alice Fenn. See: Who was the wife of Joseph Clark?

  • That the initial claim to her being a Pepper was from the 1886 History of Medway by Jameson, which provided no evidence for that surname.[3]
  • That a c1896 claim by Augustus Peck Clarke alleged Joseph arrived first in 1630 at Dorchester, returned to England in time to depart from London for Virginia in 1635 on board the ship Constance, age 35 accompanied by 15-yr-old Alice "Brass" - "a supposed alias for an Alice 'Peppitt' who was baptized in 1623, dau of Robert and Elizabeth (Leake) Peppitt, at St. Aldemary, near London, whence the ship departed." This has two errors:1) As noted in earlier response, a Joseph Clark did reside at Dorchester, MA by 22 Nov 1634, but he removed to Windsor Connecticut and d. there 1641. 2) The only Clark on the published passenger list of the Constance was a JOHN Clark.[3]

A 1998 article in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register states that proof has been found that Joseph Clark was married instead to Alice Fenn[4] Joseph and his siblings were located Banham, Norfolk, England, where a marriage record was found between Josephus Clark and Alicia Fenne 15 April 1640

Biography

Robert Peppit had children baptized and buried at Saint Mary Aldermary, London, England. It is presumed that Elizabeth Leake, his wife, was the mother although early baptismal registers seldom mentioned the mother's name. The registers mention that they lived on Turnbase Lane, in the Cordwainer ward of London[5]

Ailles,[5] aka Alice, Peppit was bpt. 25 Mar 1623 at St. Mary Aldermary, London.[6][5]

Alice's death is unknown. 17 Mar 1710 Medfield, Norfolk, Massachusetts was the death date of Alice (Fenn) Clark.

Pepper-1286 and Pepper-76 appear to represent the same person because: Same person (both disproven spouse of Joseph Clarke)

Unfortunately for genealogists today, when old genealogies are proved to be wrong, no one goes and corrects the old genealogies. Alice Pepper is just such a person. It has been proved (see his profile) that this Joseph Clark married Alice Fenn not Alice Pepper. Profile for the real Alice Pepper/Peppit. the Joseph's are being merged. Shall I merge this profile into Alice Fenn.

Someone created a duplicate. Before I merge, the LNAB should be corrected to Peppit, which was the correct LNAB as on the church records. Objection?
