John was born in 1817. He was the son of Evans Pepperell, a Cordwainer of Kingsbridge, Devon, and Maria Mills.
He was baptised on 2 March 1817 at Ebenezer Chapel-Wesleyan Methodist, Kingsbridge, Devon, England.[1]
He married Esther Gardner on 26 March 1837 in St Mary, Lambeth, Surrey, England, after Banns.[2] The witnesses were Evans Pepperell and J. Longman Gawler.
They went on to have about seven children.
UK Census Event Date 1841: Living with his wife Esther, three young children and five others in Golden Lane, St Giles Without Cripplegate, Middlesex, England. Aged about 20.
Occupation: Coffee House Keeper
On 9 October 1842 he was granted Freedom of the City Admission Papers.[3]
In the UK Census of 1851 John and his wife were recorded at Wylds Rent, Bermondsey, Surrey, England. Aged 34. Also in the household were their six sons and one daughter.
Occupation: Mustard Maker
John (aged 44) and Esther (aged 44) made the decision to emigrate from England to New Zealand. They travelled on the ship Royal Stuart under Captain Tadman, departing from London on 2 July 1861 and arriving into Lyttelton, Canterbury on 8 October 1861. With them were their five sons Evans (19), Thomas (15), Robert (13), James (11) and Henry (9). John's occupation was recorded as Labourer.
In 1875 he was recorded living at North Bank, Avon, Christchurch.[4]
He died in 1877 at the age of 60.
