Flag of Devon (adopted 2003)
David Pepperrell was born in Exeter, Devon, England.
David was a Plasterer in Exeter and Kingston upon Thames.

Early Life

David was born on 1 August 1804[1] in Exeter, Devon, the son of Richard Pepperrell, a carpenter and builder, and Hannah Evanes. He was baptised on 17 August 1804[2][3] in either Bow Now Mint or Georges Meeting House (Presbyterian/Prexeterrian) in Exeter, Devon, England. Note: Surname shown as Peppernel and Mother shown as Ann not Hannah and George's Meeting House is now a J.D. Wetherspoons public house.

Family

Banns of Marriage between David and Elizabeth Hore were published on 12, 19 and 26 September 1824 in St Mary Major, Exeter, Devon, England [4] with the marriage occurring on 3 October 1824 in St Mary Major, Exeter.[5] They had 7 children, although there are gaps 1824-1828 and 1834-1838, which might point to miscarriages or stillbirths.

  2. Jane Howe Pepperrell (b. 1833)
  3. Sarah Pepperrell (b. 1834)
  4. Caroline Pepperrell (b.1838)
  5. Harriet Pepperrell (b. 1840)
  6. David Pepperrell (b. 1842)
  7. John Pepperrell (b. 1845)

In the 1841 Census Return of England and Wales, enumerated on June 6, David (age 30) was living in Pancrass Street in the civil parish of St Pancras in Exeter, Devon, England.[6]

The household was enumerated as David Pepperrell (30) plasterer, Elizabeth Pepperrell (30), Richard Pepperrell (14), Jane Pepperrell (8), Sarah Pepperrell (5), and Harriet Pepperrell (2).

In 1851 Census Return of England and Wales, enumerated on March 30, David (age 41) was the head of household living in Preston Street in the civil parish of Exeter St Mary Major in Exeter, Devon, England.[7]

The household was enumerated as David Pepperall (41) Plasterer, wife Elizabeth Pepperall (42) work at Paper Mills, son Richard Pepperall (22) Plasterer, daughter Jane Pepperall (18) work at Paper Mills, daughter Sarah Pepperall (16), son David Pepperall (9), and son John Pepperall (6).

Sometime between the 1851 and 1861 census David chose to move his family to Surbiton, Surrey.

In 1861 Census Return of England & Wales, enumerated on April 7, David (age 55) was the head of household living in Clay Hill in the Ecclesiastical District of Surbiton St Mark in Kingston, Surrey, England.[8]

The household was enumerated as David Peperall (55) Journeyman Plasterer, wife Elizabeth Peperall (56), son David Peperall (18) Journeyman Plasterer, and son John Peperall (16) Journeyman Plasterer.

His other son Richard had also travelled to Clay Hill and was enumerated, with his family, on the same page as his parents and siblings.

Death

David died (aged 67) of Phthisis (Tuberculosis) on 25 June 1868 in Richmond Grove, Kingston, Surrey.[9][10] David was buried in Kingston Cemetery and Crematorium[11].

Research Notes

Research Question: When and why did David Pepperrell move his family to Surbiton, Surrey?

Hypothesis 1: David and his sons Richard, David and John were all plasterers in Exeter and they moved for new work opportunities.
  1. Discovered move must have happened after the birth of his first grandson in October 1852 who was born in Exeter and before the birth of his next grandson in October 1854 who was born in Surbiton. Pepperrell-22 11:20, 16 March 2024 (UTC)
  2. Discovered that the London and South Western Railway ("LSWR") resited their original station, east of King Charles Road, Kingston to Surbiton in 1845 but the complete route, from London Waterloo to Exeter Queens Street (now Exeter Central), was not completed until 19 July 1860 but the availability of fast travel into London encouraged new housing development close to the new Surbiton station.
