During the First World War 6530 Private Charles Pepperrell served with the 1st Battalion, East Surrey Regiment on the Western Front. In 1916, the 1st Battalion took part in the great battles of the River Somme, and distinguished itself notably at Morval in September. The Battalion took part in many of the great battles of 1917, such as Arras and the Third Battle of Ypres (also known as the Battle of Passchendaele). The battle ran from July to November 1917, for control of the ridges south and east of the Belgian city of Ypres in West Flanders.[13]
1917 November 6, Charles was killed in action in Passchendaele, West Flanders, Belgium.Private died on 6 November 1917[14] and was buried in Ypres (Ieper), Arrondissement Ieper, West Flanders (West-Vlaanderen), Belgium.[15][16] His body was later exhumed and re-buried in the Hooge Crater Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. (Co-ordinates: 50.84623, 2.9434, Number of casualties: 2353) on April 10, 1919 in Plot VIII, Row C, Grave 17.[17][18].
