Biography

Mary Ann "Mollie" Peppers was born in Hertford County, North Carolina on May 18, 1846. [1]

She was quite young when her father passed away because the 1850 Census of District 52 in Randolph County, Virginia (later West Virginia) has her living with her widowed mother. [2]

On May 31, 1866, Mollie married John C Flanagan in Tucker County, West Virginia. [3]

Mollie lived in Dry Fork, Randolph, West Virginia in 1880 with her husband and 5 of her children. [4]

A Mollie Flanagan shows up in two 1900 Census. One is living in Dry Fork, with her daughter Roxie and Roxie's husband Adam Kerns. [5] There is also a Mollie Flanagan and her daughter Rosa living next door to Sterling Flanagan in the Black Fork District of Tucker County. [6] Mollie had two daughters with those names, and their month and year of birth on the Census matches, also. Most likely Mollie divided her time between her two daughters and at the time of each Census happened to be living in the household. She appears to have separated from her husband, John, after his trial and later acquittal for the murder of his lover, Frances Summerfield. [7]

In 1910 she was living with her son Sterling and his family in Huttonsville, Randolph, West Virginia [8] while her husband was living with their son Cordias Lee in Dry Fork. [9]

Later she moved back into her daughter Roxie's household and was there in 1920 in the town of Beverly in Randolph County. [10]

Mollie passed away on Oct 5, 1926 in Elkins, West Virginia from "paralysis-apoplexy" (stroke) and was buried in the Moore Family Cemetery in Porterwood, [11][12] [13]
