Biography

Born Louisa was born in London in 1858 ^[1] and baptised on 24 April 1858 at St Marylebone Westminster ^[2]. The family address was 9 Manchester Square Westminster.
In 1861 ^[3] Louisa (3) was living with her father Charles Jones /47) "practising physician" in Marylebone London together with siblings Percival Hinton Jones (18) "banker's clerk", Hamilton Jones (16) "clerk" and Florence Jones (11) "scholar". Also in the household were Eliza Calver (38) "housemaid" and Lizzie Jane Ashley (21) "cook". It is not clear where her mother was.
In 1871 ^[4] Ada Percival (13) "scholar" was living with her parents Charles Percival (57) "physician" and Louisa Percival (53) at 7 Manchester Square, Marylebone together with siblings Lionel (24) "clerk", Arthur (22) "clerk", Florence (21) and Lloyd (18) "clerk". Also in the household were Joseph Glenn (74) "physician retired" as well as Mary Marks (29) and Jane Maudlin (21), both "servants".

Marriage Louisa Ada Gordon Percival, the daughter of Dr Charles Jones Percival MD, married Arthur Joseph Sulley, son of Joseph Sulley, on 16 December 1880 at St Thomas Marylebone London ^{[5] [6]}.
Arthur and Ada had two children:

In 1881 ^[7] Ada (23) and Arthur (27) "Art Dealer / Works of art" were living at 70 Finchley Road Hampstead with Emily M. Andrews (21) "cook" and Emily J. Smith (17) "housemaid".
In 1891 ^[8] Ada (33) and the children were living at 44 Albany Villas Hove, Sussex whereas Arthur (37) "Publisher / Books" was staying at the Savoy Hotel in St Clement Danes London ^[9].

In 1895 there were divorce proceedings in the High Court of Justice between Arthur Joseph Sulley and Ada Sulley with a co-respondent named Walter Montague Gattie. The petition was filed by Arthur on 9 March 1894 but dismissed on 12 July 1895 ^[10].

However, it would appear that they had separated as in 1901 ^[11] Ada and daughter Sylvia (10) were living in "The Firs" Eton Road Dachet Bucks together with Jane Cox (25) the housemaid ^[12] whilst Arthur (47) "Fine Art Dealer" was living on his own at 26 North Audley St Mayfair ^[13].
in 1911 ^[14] Ada (53) was living with her widowed brother Percy Percival (68) at 16 Fourth Avenue Hove; the census confirms that she had had two children both of whom were still living. No return for Arthur has been found so far.
Between 1918 ^[15] and 1925 ^[16] Ada was registered at 23f De Vere Gardens Kensington, London although in 1921 ^[17] Ada Gordon Sulley (63) together with her married daughter Sylvia Gordon (Sulley) Stewart (30) were "boarders" in the household of Emily Pope (61) at 57, Tisbury Road, Hove in Steyning, Sussex.
In 1930 ^[18] Ada was registered at 16 Fourth Avenue Hove; Edith May Hollister was also registered at the same address.
In 1939 ^[19] Louisa A G Sulley, widow, was living at 16 Fourth Avenue Hove Sussex together with Katharine Whitcom b1899 and two other persons (entries blacked out).

Died Louisa Ada Gordon Sulley of 16 Fourth Avenue Hove died age 84 in 1942 ^[20]. Probate was granted in Lewis on 9 December 1942 to William George Stewart importer attorney of Sylvia Gordon Stewart (wife of William George Stewart). Effects £4039 6s 5d. ^[21].

Research Notes

Ada's family name up until the 1861 Census was Jones; her parents listed as Charles Jones and Louisa née Champante. In 1871 and at the time of her marriage it had changed to Percival. So far no apparent reason has been found.
