Robert Adam Percle was born on June 7, 1910, with his twin sister Ruby Eve, on the Trinity Plantation near Napoleonville, Assumption Parish, Louisiana, USA. He was the son of Eno Percle and Marie Daigle. The 1910 US census records the family living at Trinity Plantation within incorporated Napoleonville, in Assumption Parish. The date of enumeration was April 22, 1910, so Marie was pregnant with the twins, their birth being only about 6 weeks after the census was taken.[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] [17]

Residence

In the 1920 census, taken February 27, 1920, Robert was living with his family in Police Jury Ward 8, Assumption, Louisiana, USA. He was recorded as age 11 but he was only 9 years old. He was listed as the son of Eno and Mary Percle. Marital Status: Single, Relation to Head of House: Son, Attended School: yes, Speaks English: yes. A hand written note in the farm schedule column of the census appears to say, "Napoleonville ward no. 4" and in the margin another note states, "Moved here January 20". This seems to indicate the family had recently moved to the 8th ward, perhaps owning property in the 4th ward or having recently moved from the 4th ward. [1] [2]

By 1930, the family had moved to Algiers. In the 1930 census, Robert was living with his family at 247 Belleville Street, Algiers, New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, USA. He was listed as the son of Eno and Mary Percle. Marital Status: Single, Relation to Head of House: Son. His occupation was recorded as "Salesman", Industry: "Coffee Route". [18] [4]

Marriage

Robert married Lucille Intravaia on February 12, 1935, at St. Stephens Church in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA. [19]
In the presence of a large number of relatives and friends the wedding of Miss Lucille Intravaia daughter of Mr and Mrs Benedict Intravaia of New Orleans to Mr Robert A Percle son of Mr and Mrs Eno Percle took place on Feb 12 at eleven-thirty at a nuptial mass at St Stephen's Church. The main aisle of the church was decorated with many palms and standards of white flowers. The bridal party entered the church to the tune of Mendelssohn's wedding march. The bride who was given in marriage by her father was lovely in a gown of white satin made on simple lines with monk sleeves and a high monk collar. The train which was six yards long and six yards wide formed a beautiful fan. The veil of illusion which fell gracefully over the train was held to the head with a lace cap and sprays of orange hossoms. She carried a mother of pearl prayer book from which fell showers of lilies of the valley. Miss Ruby Percle a sister of the groom was maid of honor. Miss Adeline Intravaia the bride’s sister and Miss Elvira Mirante were the bridesmaids. June Guillot was the junior bridesmaid. They wore elevating shades of green with accessories to match beginning with pea green and ending with jade. They carried elevating shades of yellow roses beginning with a delicate yellow and ending with a lovely golden yellow. The groom had as his attendants the bride’s brother Mr Joseph Intravaia as best man, and groomsmen Messrs Hubert Elzey and Uhrey Delaune. The ushers were Mr Thomas Young and Mr James Nolan. They wore black frock-tail coats and gray-striped trousers. During the registering the bride’s sister Miss Virginia Intravaia sang Ave Marie accompanied by Prof Gernhouse at the organ. A reception followed at the home of the bride’s parents 1507 Robert St. Mr and Mrs Percle have returned from a trip on the Gulf Coast and are at home at 247 Belleville."

In the US Census recorded April 3, 1940, Robert and Lucille are living with Lucille's Aunt, Josephine Manzella and Lucille's cousin, Anthony Cusimano at 4928 Prytania Street, New Orleans. Marital Status: Married; Relation to Head of House: Nephew-in-law. New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Robert's and Anthony's occupations are both recorded as "Proprietor - partner", Industry: "Cafe and barroom". [6] Robert also registered for the draft in 1940. His physical descritpion on the draft card reads, "Height (approx.) 5' 6 1/2", Weight (approx.) 142, Race: White, Eyes: Brown, Hair: Brown, Complexion: Light" [21]

Service ended: 12 Sep 1945

Robert enlisted in the US Navy on 7 Nov 1942. [8] He served on board the USS Salem (CM-11). He was first received on board the USS Salem on Christmas day, December 25, 1943. He joined the ship in New York where it had arrived in October after returning from the Mediterranean where she supported the invasion of Sicily. The ship was repaired and carried out Atlantic coast operations until 11 May 1944 when she departed Hampton Roads to join the Service Squadron 6 in the Pacific. On April 2, 1945, Salem's gunners helped shoot down a plane that was trying to crash into Lunga Point (CVE-94), a Casablanca-class escort carrier. Robert mustered out of the Navy on September 12, 1945. Only a month after the day the fighting stopped in the Pacific, August 15, 1945, and one month before, the USS Salem was renamed the USS Shawmut to allow the name to be used by the new Des Moines class heavy cruiser, USS Salem (CA-139). Death

Neal - Thanks for the reminder, I had forgotten about this pending merge. However, the formatting of Percle-47 seems messed up. The bulk of the biography appears to have moved into Research Notes and all the "Facts without dates" actually have dates (and inline references), while some of the subtitles in the biography somehow became references (???). Would you mind if I back out the Wikitree AGC changes before I merge these two profiles to start with a cleaner format from Percle-47? Then I can work on cleaning up the biography after the merge.

Yes, I can restore the data back to the previous revision. I also reached out to Barry Folse, Percle-10 profile manager (and my 3rd cousin), to let him know that I'm going to merge everything back to Percle-10, then do a clean up.
