Biography

Ada Mary Percy was born on 24 January 1856 in Snake Valley , Caulfield's Creek, near Ballan. She was the eldest child of Henry Percy and Annie Seymour who had married at Geelong in 1855. Ada Mary married Charles F. Sutherland at Mt. Egerton in 1873 He was the son of William Sutherland and Eliza, from Ferris, Mornyshire, Scotland and was variously described as a sea captain and a miner of Snake Valley. He died on 21 November 1876, aged 29. Their two sons born at Snake Valleydid not survive to have issue. Ned Kelly came to the hotel run by Ada at Mulwala and asked for sandwiches etc., while Ada was having tea with her daughter's godmother, a Mrs Hayes, a property owner at Corowa . Later the same day, 10 February 1879, Kelly robbed the bank at Jerilderie. Police came by that night looking for him and asked if any strangers had been in and she replied that there were always strangers around. Ada married a second time on 7 April 1881 to Thomas Hoskin, the widower of Mary Ride, and they had five children who survived childhood. They had the farm and other property in Mulwala probably from Ada's family. In 1894 Ada moved to Ballarat with the children. Thomas remained but moved to Benalla soon after. The will of Thomas Hoskin retired farmer in 1913 left everything to his wife Ada and daughter Rebecca Bertha Maud equally. After Thomas died Ada moved into his house in Benalla where she died just a few years later and this is recorded in the Benalla Standard: "Friday February, 1916. The death occurred on Wednesday at the residence of her son in law, Arundel Street, of Mrs Ada Mary Hoskin, relict of the late Mr. Thomas Hoskin, after a long illness. The late Mrs. Hoskin was a native of Snake Valley, and when 16 years of age was married to the late Mr. Charles Sutherland, who died soon after. She was married a second time at Mulwala to the late Mr. Thomas Hoskin, who predeceased her about two years ago. There was no family by the first marriage, but by the second there were two sons (Messrs. Richard Henry and Henry D'Arcy) and two daughters (Mrs. Greville and Miss Ada Elizabeth). The remains will be interred in the Benalla cemetery today."
