Biography

Sarah Percy was born on 1781, the daughter of Charles Percy and Susannah Collins. Sarah Percy first married John Ellis, d. 1808 secondly married Nathaniel Ware, b. 1789, d. 1854. She died 1836.

Sarah had married Judge Ellis when she was only eighteen, on December 21, 1799. Settling at Ellis Cliffs, 20 miles below Natchez, they made their home Laurel Hill, a plantation house built sometime before 1775. According to a Spanish military intelligence report, Abram Ellis, Sarah Percy’s father in law, had been known as “the riches and quietest inhabitant” of the district. After Judge Ellis die in late 1808, she fell in love with the handsome Nathaniel A. Ware of Woodville, Wilkinson County, near the old Northumberlnd House plantation and married him in 1814. He was a well-regarded lawyer in partnership with the Thomas B. Reed, a leading attorney of the region.[1]
