Biography

Portuguese Flag
John Pereira was born in Portugal.

João "John" Pereira was born about 1829 in the Azores. He was the son of Manoel "Manuel" Pereira. He migrated to England in 1849, arriving on the 17th of December 1849.

John's Signature

John met Mary Ann Rogers in London, England and married her in St James Westminster in 1854. John and Mary had the following children in England:

  1. Manuel Pereira b 1856
  2. John Ernest Pereira b 1857
  3. William Pereira b 1859
  4. Alice Pereira b 1861

John married a second time, in 1869, to Mary Ann Charlotte "Miriam" Treasure. He was a widower and she was a spinster (never married) from the parish of Saint Barnaby. John and Miriam had at least two children together:

  1. Frederick Pereira b 1872
  2. Grace Margaret Pereira b 1875[1][2]

When their daughter Grace was born his occupation was listed as a "cabinet maker."

John died on the 29th of March 1897. He had reached the age of seventy-one. His probate was dated the 10th of April and mentioned his widow Mary Ann Charlotte Pereira. John left a total of £548 11s 10d for his widow.

Research Notes

  • Passports aren't available online at the CCA site until 1875.
  • The name of the ship isn't available on the England manifest and I don't see him listed in the transcribed records on ImmigrantShips.net.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Hello Laura,

I looked through his documents hoping to see what county or parish he came from but didn't see anything. He should have sailed out of Ponta Delgada as that was the port for São Miguel. The England record doesn't show parish nativity though and it doesn't say he had a passport.

Do you know if he had siblings or parents that migrated when he did? Hopefully, you can find a piece of the puzzle!.

Hi Laura,

Do you know where on São Miguel your ancestors came from? I have many from Feteiras, Ponta Delgada.

Best of luck with your research!
