Carolina Augusta Pereira de Eça had an illegitimate child with José Maria de Almeida Teixeira de Eça de Queirós.[2][3] This child, José Maria de Eça de Queirós, grew up to become the greatest Portuguese realist writer. Carolina later married José, but their son was already being raised by José's father (and the boy's Godmother) and he never returned to live with them.[2]

↑ "Vila do Conde Register of Baptisms, 1843-1852," database with images, ADPorto (Vila do Conde Baptisms : accessed 4 Sep 2019), entry for Joze Maria, child of Joze Maria d'Almeida da Teixeira de Queiroz and unknown mother, 1845; citing Vila do Conde parish baptism registers, held at the Arquivo Distrital do Porto. The parents were not married, which did not prevent (in itself) both of the parents from being listed in the baptism register, as long as the union did not go against Canonical and Civil rules. Usually the mother is listed and the father is said to be 'unknown' or rather 'unnamed.' In this case only the father was listed on the baptism record.
