Biography

Vern Perkins was an Appalachian.
Vern Perkins was an Ohioan.

Birth date listed on death certificate is Nov 5, 1887 Informant is Mrs. Mary Perkins (his sister?) Mother listed as Mary Dunham on death certificate which is not correct

At some point after his mother died and before 1900 he was living with a legal guardian in Howard City, Montcalm, MI named Mary Buzzell. She applied for Vern's dad's pension after he died but did not get it - I have NARA file pension record.

Guardianship papers filed in Montcalm County, MI probate court (pending papers from court)

1900 Census - Howard City, Montcalm, MI living as a boarder with Mary Buzzell

1910 Census - Grand Rapids Ward 3, Kent, MI living with wife Tillie as boarders in the William Baker household on South Division St., driver of laundry wagon

1920 Census - Grand Rapids, Kent, MI single, actor

In 1920 when he married Christine Betzler he listed his occupation as steeplejack. He also listed his mother as Marion Dunham which is also used on his death certificate but is not consistent with family Bible records or his official birth records.

His obit states that he leaves a daughter Mrs. Mary Glietsman of New York (this is his SISTER "Honey")

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Vern by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Vern:

Would like additional information on legal guardian Mary Buzzell and how/when she was given custody. The other children were also minors at the time and were not in her household.
