Biography

Charles Ely, b. 1774, d. 1854, son of Cullick Ely and Sarah Foote; m. 1796, Elizabeth Perkins, who was b. 1778, d. 1858, dau. of Elizabeth Ely and Abraham Perkins. [1]

Elizabeth, b. 2 Sept., 1778, at Lyme. She m. 29 Dec, 1796, Charles Ely, b. 19 April, 1772, fifth son of Cullick Ely and Sarah Foote of Lyme. He was a merchant at Hartford in early life. But after his marriage he settled as a farmer upon the farm which had belonged to his ancestor, the first Richard Ely of Lyme, and which has been in possession of the Ely family nearly two hundred years, on the east bank of the Connecticut river in Lyme; where he d. 19 Dec, 1854, and she d. 10 March, 1858. They had ten children, born at Lyme :

1. Miranda, b. 25 Sept., 1797, living at the old homestead at Lyme, in 1859, unm.

2. Charles Frederick, b. 4 Sept., 1799, was a merchant, and settled at Natchez, where he m. Henrietta M. Shelby, born in Maryland. They removed to Phila- delphia, and from there to Louisiana, where he d. 10 Sept., 1841, and she was living at Camden, Ark., in 1859. They had two children born at Natchez: Eliza- beth, who m. John Silliman and was living at Camden, Ark., in 1859; and James Pennoyer, who d. in Mexico, unm.

3. Elizabeth Perkins, b. i July, 1802, m. her mother's first cousin, Similius Brockway Ely, third son of Abner Ely and Bridget Brockway, and d. 22 July, 1854, s. p.

4. Abraham Perkins, b. i July, 1808, m. 15 Sept., 1838, Philura Grififin, b. 31 July, 1806, at Lyme, dau. of Allen Griffin and Rhoda Beckwith. They settled at Lyme, removed to Rochester in 1848, and to Oswego, N. Y., in 1855, where they were living in 1859. He was sheriflf of New London Co., when at Lyme, and was afterwards a merchant and miller. They had seven children: Hubert Griffin, b. 20 Oct., 1834, d. 20 Sept., 1846; Sarah Catherine, b. 29 Aug., 1836; Jane Elizabeth, b. 18 March, 1839; a child, b. i Oct., 1840, d. 3 Oct., 1840, unnamed; Henry Perkins, b. 15 Oct., 1842; George Griffin, b. 10 March, 1846, d. 24 Sept., 1847; and Allen Griffin, b. 9 July, 1850, d. 16 Feb., 1852.

5. Samuel Cullick, b. 17 Oct., 1810, m. 1843, Frances Griffin Brockway, dau. of Ezekiel Brockway and Frances Griffin of Lyme. He was a merchant and they settled at Lyme, where he was a senator and a member of the other branch of the legislature; and where they were living in 1859. They had two children: Florence Elizabeth, b. in 1847, and Frances, b. 1850.

6. David, b. 29 Sept., 1812, and d. 25 Dec, 1813.

7. Ulysses, b. 19 Feb., 1815, was a merchant, and went to St. Thomas, W. I., and m. 1837 Henrietta Van Bretton, dau. of Baron John Van Bretton of that island. They subsequently lived at Laguira, Marseilles, and New York, and in 1859 at Norwalk, Conn. They had six children: Elizabeth Van Bretton, b. Sept., 1838, at St. Thomas; Georgianna Florence, b. 1840, at St. Thomas, m. 1856, Henry H. Raven of St. Thomas, and living at New York in 1859; Judith Rowena, b. 1843, at Laguira; Charles Ulysses, b. 1846 at St. Thomas; Albert, who d. in infancy; and Albertina, b. 1852, at New York.

8. Alfred (twin), b. 19 Feb., 1815, m. 31 May, 1842, Caroline Lydia Field, dau. of Joseph Field and Lydia Glover of Rochester. He was a lawyer~and they settled at Rochester, where they were living in 1861, and he was then a member of congress, and had four children: Joseph Field, b. 5 March, 1843; Charles Alfred, b. 6 Nov., 184s, d. 2 March, 1847; Caroline Lydia, b. 7 Sept., 1847; and Elizabeth, b. 6 July, 1850. He was taken prisoner at the battle of Bull Run, July, 1861, and published a work on the subject of his imprisonment, etc.

9. George, b. 29 Oct., 1817, m. 11 Dec, 1855, Marianna Paige, b. 25 June, 1834, at Haverhill, Mass., youngest dau. of Abel Paige and Marianna Kimball. He was a lawyer, and they settled at Chicago, where they were living in 1859, and had one child: Elizabeth Paige, b. 9 Sept., 1856, at Haverhill.

10. David Alexander, b. 18 July, 1821. He was a lawyer and settled at Rochester. He went to California in 1850, and in 1859 was living at San Francisco, [2]
