Biography

Flag of Barbados.
Ann (Perratt) Mayo was born in Barbados.

Ann Perratt was born in 1701 in Barbados to John Perratt and his wife Ann Hales[1]. She (Ann Perratt) was christened on 31 May 1701 in St Philip, Barbados.[2]

Ann was living with her brother John Perratt Jr. in Barbados 27 August 1731[3] when William Mayo, widower of Goochland County, Virginia, wrote John a long letter concerning proposal of marriage with Ann. [4]

Ann accepted William's proposal of marriage[3] and moved to Virginia, where they were married sometime shortly thereafter. They had four known children together:

  1. Daniel Mayo (1733–1761)
  2. Rebecca (Mayo) Macon (1735–1762)
  3. John Mayo (1737–1786) Memorial # 85961889
  4. Joseph (1739–1830) Memorial # 213255474

Her husband William passed away in October of 1744.[5]

She was named in his will, which was probated that year. In it, he bequeathed her 2,400 acres of property in Goochland and 21 slaves.[6]

To wife Ann, for life, my house and my lots at the Capitol landing and my 2,400 acres at Fine Creek in Goochland, and uses of slaves: Mamoe, Fatima, Jenny, Turpin, Congo, Awhey, Jollof, Cudgeo, Maddy, Harry, Rose, Pompey, Brissey, Shaty, Philip, Robin, Little Inan, Kate, Annie, Dick and Ned. Also to her my mill called Bide Mill on Peterville Chapel Branch, with 400 acres, also my household goods, tools and store goods.

Ann was mentioned on a memorial in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Richmond City, Virginia, USA with a death date of 28 Nov 1773.[7]

Her death was also recorded by Rev. William Douglas- "Nov . 28, 1773 Madam Mayo died" (Douglas Register pg. 341).[3]

Will of Ann Mayo

A full transcript of the will can be viewed here: Transcribed Will of Ann Perratt

Anne wrote her final will and testament on January 29, 1770. It would be probated almost four years later on December 27, 1773 in Cumberland County.

In this will, Ann names her sons Joseph and John (who was named executor). It doesn't name her daughter Rebecca or son Daniel, who both passed away before she wrote her will. She does however name Rebecca's daughters Mary and Ann Macon, and Daniel's son Daniel.

According to this record, she was in possession of property in New Glasgow, and owned at least 12 slaves.

Slaves

See the list of slaves she owned here: Space:Slaves_of_Ann_Perratt,_Virginia

According to her husband's will and her will, Ann owned a number of slaves during her lifetime, in both Goochland and Cumberland counties.

Perratt-16 and Perratt-7 are not ready to be merged because: Plenty to resolve before these can be merged including but not limited to: take extra care - there have already been several merges; is her mother Ann or Elizabeth? marriage in London or Barbados? is she mother of all these children - is it definitely one person or conflated profiles?
Perratt-16 and Perratt-7 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same father, same dates, same husband
