The children's baptismal records make clear that the family's home was in Chambly, but the first four children were born in La Prairie, where three records make clear that they were only "staying" in La Prairie. And one of the records explains that they were there because of the war - Nine Years' War (King William's War) in which France and England were at a war, which in North America being fought mostly by the English with Iroquois Confederacy against the French with Huron and Algonquins. In 1687, three thousand French militia and Indian allies went up the Richelieu (right past Chambly) and attacked the centre of the Iroquois in what is now New York state. They did not find many Indians but they completely destroyed a Seneca village with their buildings, crops and stored food supply. The Iroquois, mostly Mohawk, retaliated with the "Lachine Massacre" of 1689 when that community on the west end of Montreal island was destroyed. 24 French settlers were killed and 70 taken captive most of whom were tortured to death.
A peace treaty was signed among the French settlers and all of the native tribes in 1701. After that date, the family is back in Chambly according to the baptismal records of their next three children.[11]
