Biography

Menzo D. Perry was born about 1827 in Madison County, New York the son of William Perry and Rachel Hamilton.[1]

In 1850, Menzo appeared in DeRuyter, Madison, New York with two different families on the census. He is listed as a laborer in the household of Richard Delemutter who was a mechanic.[2] He also is listed as a laborer in farmer Henry H Benjamin's household.[3]

By 1855, Menzo married Cynthia Maria Kellogg and they appear on the New York State Census at Georgetown, Madison, New York. He was a farmer and owed the land.[1] In 1860 the family was at Georgetown and Menzo's real estate is valued at $2,000 with no value for personal estate. Their first child, Henry or Orson, also appeared in their household.[4]

The 1865 New York State Census showed Menzo back at DeRuyter. He was still a farmer who owned land. Cynthia's record had her the mother of three children. [5] Only DeVere and Orville were listed in the household as Henry died 4 June 1862.[6]

The 1870 Census at DeRuyter found Menzo a farmer with real estate valued at $800 and personal estate at $1,000. Along with DeVere and Orville, Mary and Ernest born since the 1865 Census appeared in the household as does Cynthia's mother Laura Kellogg.[7] Amenzo and Cynthia still resided at DeRuyter on the 1875 New York State Census in a frame house valued at $100 and he continued to be a farmer. The household included their four children DeVere, Orville, Mary and Ernest plus mother-in-law Laura Kellogg.[8]

Still a farmer at DeRuyter at the time of the 1880 Census, Menzo and Cynthia's household consisted of children Mary and Ernest and mother-in-law Laura Kellogg now 84.[9]

However, the 1892 New York Census had Menzo, Cynthia and Orville at Cazenovia, Madison where Menzo and Orville were laborers.[10] Menzo died about 1894 in New York according to some un-sourced family trees. He had died by 1900 when Laura's marital status was given as widowed on that year's census.[11]

Research Notes

Walter Kellogg in Menzo's household on the 1870 Census is listed as Cynthia's nephew. Checked Cynthia's brothers as found on FamilySearch and did not find a son named Walter among them. 2 January 2019 Jill Perry
