Daring Pioneer story

The first traders in this county were some Indian traders, and adventurers from the Conococheague and Conodoguinette settlements. Some of the more daring acted as pioneers and settled at Path Valley, some at Aughwick, and others in the Big Cove, within the present limits of the county. These settled between 1740 and 1750. The principal pioneers in Path Valley, or Tuscarora Valley, were Abraham Slach, James Blair, Moses Moore, Arthur Dunlap, Alexander McCartie, David Lewis, Adam McCartie, Felix Doyle, Andrew Dunlap, Robert Wilson, Jacob Pyatt, Jacob Pyatt, jr. William Ramage, Reynolds Alexander, Samuel Patterson, Robert Baker, John Armstrong, John Potts. Those at Aughwick, Peter Falconer, Nicholas De Long, Samuel Perry, John Charleton and others.

Building Pipers Tavern

Shippensburg is the oldest community of the Cumberland Valley, and the second oldest west of the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. In July, 1730, 12 Scoth-Irish families came to the site of the present day Shippensburg and built cabin homes along Burd's Run. Shippensburg began as the western outpost of colonial settlement. The village received its name from Edward Shippen, a prominent resident of Lancaster who obtained the patent to the land from the heirs of William Penn. In 1735, Samuel Perry built the Widow Piper's Tavern, which stands at the southwest corner of East King Street and Queen Street. This building was selected as the place for the first Cumberland County Courts in 1750 and 1751. The building has been restored and serves today as the home of the Shippensburg Civic Club. [7]

French and Indian War

On Page 77 of "Egle's History of Pennsylvania, it is recorded that in May of 1746 the Province of Pennsylvania was called upon to furnish Four companies of troops of 100 men each to join in an attempt by The Crown to conquer Canada.

Under the direction of Governor George Thomas of the Province of Pennsylvania, these four companies of over 100 men each, were recruited and placed under the command of four commanding officers as follows: Captain John Sahnnon, Captain John Deimer, Captain William Trent, and Captain SAMUEL PERRY, and in the autumn of 1746, they were sent forward to Albany New York.

The rolls of these four companies will be found on pages 6-16 in the Pennsylvania Archives, Series Five, Vol 1, and a careful examination of them indicates that Captain PERRY's recruits were from Eastern Pennsylvania. There were upwards of 112 men in his company -- Irish, German and Swedes. Substantially all had been born abroad, save two or three who had been born in New Jersey.

There is also a letter, Dated may 31st, 1747 from Captain Samuel PERRY to Richard Peters, Secretary of the Province of Pennsylvania. (Provincial Papers, Vol IX, page 65, in the State Library and Museum in Harrisburg Pennsylvania.

This information, and much more, is from the publication of the Texas State Genealogical Society, Stirpes, Volume 9, Number 1, March 1969, and is avaialble online.
