Edward Aylsworth Perry was born in Massachusetts. Perry studied law in Alabama and was admitted to the bar in Pensacola, where he served as a judge. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted as a private and quickly rose through the ranks attaining brigadier general and serving under Gen RE Lee. He led an all-Florida brigade at Chancellorsville but contracted typhoid and missed Gettysburg. After the war he returned to Florida and was elected governor in 1884. During his term he established the state board of education. He died suddenly of a stroke while visiting Kerrville, Texas.[1]
He was the son of Asa and Philura Perry.[1] He was christened on July 3, 1831, in Richmond, Berkshire County, Massachusetts and was the fourth of five children. [2]
In the 1860 census E A Perry was in Pensacola, Escambia, Florida, United States. He owned only one slave, a 17 year old female.[3]
