John Perry was born about 1754 (certainly before 1765), probably in Dutchess County, New York. He was the son of Rowland Perry and Beulah (Kellogg) Perry.
During the American Revolution, John Perry served as a Private in the New York Militia. Specifically, John Perry served as a Private in the Sixth Regiment of Dutchess County, New York Militia under the command of Col. Morris Graham, Col. Roswell Hopkins, and Lt. Col. Jacob Griffin.
As part of the Sixth Regiment he may have been one of the Green Mountain Boys who helped Ethan Allan and Benedict Arnold capture Fort Ticonderoga.
During the late 1780s, the Perry family decided to move to Saratoga County, New York. John's family were among the first settlers of the town of Day, Saratoga County, New York.
Saratoga County is next door to Rensselaer County, New York, which is named in honor of Col. Kiliaen van Rensselaer (1717 - 1781), a Dutch diamond and pearl merchant from Amsterdam who bought the land and established one of the first "patroonships" of the Dutch New Netherlands. Van Rensselaer was one of the chief proponents of the Charter of Freedoms and Exemptions that attracted many settlers to his farming community, and made him a local hero.
John's father Rowland Perry appears on the 1790 U.S. Census for Saratoga County, New York, with seven children. John is the third-eldest
John married Rebecca Ross ca. 1776, and they settled in Wilton, Saratoga County, New York, after the war, during the 1780s. This suggests they were settling on bounty land, land awarded to veterans of the war, but the land, bounty and claim records still need to be located.
John and Rebecca Perry had 12 children. They named their eldest son Van Rensselaer Perry, and from this we gather that they were admirers of Kiliaen van Rensselaer, possibly business partners.
Ruth Rosengarten lists all twelve children on pages 69-70 of her book on Perry family history, cited below. This list has been summarized and very neatly outlined by Tim Dowling at Geneanet.org as follows:
