Biography

Available Records

Set forth below are the only records that have been found that appear to relate to this profile's Richard Perry of Dorchester:

  • A record of an accounting of the states of Joshua Kennerly of Dorchester, dated August 27, 1734, which includes a reference to a payment received from a Richard Perry (among many others).[1]
  • The February 1745 will of a Hugh Perry of Dorchester, which mentions a son Richard Perry, a son in law Henry Johnson, and a minor granddaughter Elizabeth Johnson.[2] The will does not mention his wife, suggesting that she had died before he made his will.
  • A December 1745 inventory of the estate of Hugh Perry of Dorchester. Creditors listed were William Crowoder, Elenor Johnson (an in-law?), Thomas Perrey (unclear how related), Joseph Alford, and Henry Turner. Debts due to the deceased include a debt owed by Richard Perrey (presumably the same person as the administrator) of 19 shillings. The inventory was sworn to by Richard Perry on February 11, 1745/6.[3]
  • A June 1746 accounting of the estate of Hugh Perry of Dorchester, made by Richard Perry, as administrator of Hugh's estate.[4]
  • A March 1747 (1747/8?) inventory of the estate of Richard Perry of Dorchester. Creditors listed were Charles Dickinson, Elenor Jonson, William Pery (presumably the very wealthy William Perry who was a creditor of many people in Dorchester), and Elizabeth Perry (unclear how related). The inventory was sworn to by Mary Perry (presumably Richard's widow), as administrator of Richard's estate.[5]
  • A January 1748 (1748/9?) accounting of the estate of Richard Perry of Dorchester by Mary Perry, administrator.[6]
  • Entries in 1778 Maryland Census and the Assessment of 1783 for his presumed son, William Perry, which refer to him as William Perry "of Richard".[7]

Parentage; Date and Place of Birth

The will of Hugh Perry of Dorchester referenced above establishes him as the father of Richard. Richard's mother is unknown.

The evidence that helps establish Richard's date of birth is:

  • The 1734 accounting for the estate of Joshua Kennerly referenced above, which suggests that there was an adult Richard Perry who living in Dorchester in 1734, which means he was probably born sometime in 1654-1713.
  • The 1745 will of Hugh Perry, which includes bequests to (i) Richard, who was apparently not a minor at the time of the will and therefore must have been born before 1725, and (ii) the minor daughter of Richard's sister, which suggests that the sister was probably born sometime in 1700-1720, and as her brother, that Richard was probably born sometime 1695-1724.
  • Evidence relating to his presumed son, William Perry, which suggest that William was born sometime in 1730-1734,[8] which it turn suggests that his father, Richard, was born sometime in 1680-1713.

Together, the evidence suggests that Richard Perry was born sometime in 1695-1713.

Since both Richard and his father, Hugh Perry, were "of Dorchester County," it is reasonable to presume that Richard was born there.

Marriage and Children

Since, as discussed above, the administrator of Richard's estate was a Mary Perry, it is reasonable to presume that Richard was married to a woman named Mary. There is no evidence as to her last name.

Richard and (presumably) Mary had the following child (and perhaps others):

  1. William Perry, b. about 1730-1734 in Dorchester County, m. about 1755-1759 Mary Ann ______, d. 1792 in Caroline County

Death

Based on the March 1747 (or 1747/8) inventory of his estate and the fact that he swore to the estate of his father in June 1746, Richard Perry died sometime in late 1746 - early 1747 (or 1748). Since the inventory and accounting refer to him as "of Dorchester County", he presumably died there.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Richard by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Richard:
