From research done by Hansen, Jones, and Winton-Misch, we have the following details:
“Rychard Cleton of the town of Walberton, Sussex, England ... appears in the parish registers of Walberton when he married Dorothy “Burkenshall” (more typically spelled Birkenshaw), on 24 January 1582. Dorothy was buried at Walberton on 15 January 1613. Richard Cleyton was buried there on 13 January 1615.
"The church registers indicate the baptisms of the following children:
i. Richard Clayton - Baptized 24 Apr 1583, Richard Jr. married Elizabeth Peter at Walberton on 16 Dec 1610.
ii. John Clayton - Baptized 26 Jan 1586, John died at age 13 and was buried at Walberton on 7 Jun 1597, “son of Richard Cleton.”
iii. William Clayton - Baptized 24 Feb 1589 at Walberton.
iv. Lawrence Clayton - Baptized 25 Nov 1593. No further information."[1]
The Walberton archives show the Christenings of the following children of Rychard and (assumed) Elizabeth (Peter) Cleton:
i. John Cleton "son of Rychard Cleton" - Christened 24 November 1611 in Walberton[2]
ii. Anne Cleyton "daughter of Richard Cleyton" - Christened 4 April 1613 in Walberton[3][4]
iii. Frances Clayton "son of Richard Clayton" - Christened 10 August 1617 in Walberton[5][6][7]
iv. Elizabeth Clayton "daughter of Richard Clayton" - Christened 18 July 1624 in Walberton[8] Died and was buried in Walberton on 22 March 1622.[9][10]
Research Notes
i. "James Bellarts stated that a Richard Clayton of Rudgwick, England, baptized 30 August 1600 in that town and a son of Thomas Clayton, was the Richard who married Elizabeth Peter of Walberton in 1610. This is rather unlikely since Rudgwick was over 20 miles away, and there was a Richard Clayton already in Walberton (the first child above) and about the right age to be marrying. It seems even far less likely when you consider that Richard Clayton of Rudgwick would have been only ten years old when he got married."[1]
