Catherine Symons Peters was born at Constantine in Cornwall, England to Nicholas Peters and his wife Argent Symons, probably in early- to mid-1840. She was christened at the Constantine Parish Church on 23rd August 1840. [1] In 1861 she married Josiah Beer at Falmouth in Cornwall. [2]
After deciding to emigrate to New Zealand Catherine and Josiah can be found among the steerage passengers who disembarked from the emigrant ship 'Chile' which landed at Port Chalmers near Dunedin in Otago on 7th December 1861. Their two-year-old daughter Clara Jane Peters arrived with them.
Although they arrived at Dunedin, Josiah and his family headed south until finally settling at Riverton, a coastal settlement a few miles west of Invercargill in Southland and one of New Zealand's southern-most settlements. Catherine and Josiah eventually produced nine New Zealand-born siblings for Clara.
Catherine died at Riverton on 29th June 1912 at the age of 72, and was buried with her husband in Row C of Anglican Section 16 at the Riverton Cemetery. [3]
