      John Frederick Peter

John Frederick Peter was born near Cincinnati, Ohio, July 17, 1839, departed this life August 24, 1923, aged 84 years, 1 month and 7 days. When yet a young man he removed to Laselle county, Illinois, enlisted in the civil war at Anton, Ill., Aug. 8, 1862, served in the 104th Volunteer infantry and engaged in the battles of Chattanooga and Chicamauga and served under Generals Rosecrans and later with General Sherman until the close of the war, mustered out on April 3, 1863. On April 3, 1869 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Singer who passed away Dec. 21, 1891. Eight children were born to this union all of whom have preceded the father in death except Mrs. Eva Childers who lives near her father who was with him during his illness and at the last.

Mr. Peter came to Harper March 18, 1884, one year before the first railroad was built into Anthony. He stayed with the frontier country and endured many hardships of the early days.

In 1892 he was married to Mrs. Mary Gonder of New Mexico who preceded him in death 14 years. To this union were born one daughter Mrs. Florence Umpleby and one son Fred Peters. Two step-daughters are left Mrs. Hutch Croft of Anthony and Mrs. Kate Parker and one step-son Harry Gonder of Chicago. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock under the direction of Gard and Elliott of Anthony. Brother John Woods of the Baptist church of Anthony conducted the services. Silver Creek Sunday school furnished the music. Funeral offerings were many and beautiful. Pall bearers were George Stewart, J.R. Joyner, V.L. Spurgeon, R.M. Hawk, Grant Burton and Lawrence Burgmeier. Interment was made in the Singer cemetery where ceremonies were conducted by the Masonic lodge.

So passed one of our best citizens and sturdy pioneers a man upright character and good works, a kind and loving husband and father and a true friend. (transcribed by Judy Mayfield) July 2019
