Lost leg in an airplane crash, in which he was the pilot. He was a pilot with a private pilot's license, and he owned a small private airport in NJ. Applied for a commission to join the navy for WWII. When he took the physical to get in, he didn't tellthem about his leg. During WWII family history says that he used his own merchant marine ship to smuggle/rescue art out of Europe in advance of the invasion, and there was a ransom on his ship.
