PETERSON, Nellie
On October 19, 1996, Nellie Peterson of Mayerthorpe, Alberta, passed away at the age of 91 years.
Born Nellie Sherratt in Morden, Manitoba, she spent her childhood there, in Edmonton and later on the family homestead near Mayerthorpe. Encouraged by her parents and following her own instincts, she continued her own education, became a teacher and returned to teach in schools near Mayerthorpe. In 1925 she married Roy Peterson who remained her best friend and companion until his passing in 1993. During the 30’s she became interested in politics, particularly in the C.C.F. party, which was championing such unipolar ideas such as workers rights, pensions and universal medical care. Although Nellie was unsuccessful in her bid for election to parliament, the ideas she and her fellow C.C.F.ers presented were the foundation of the "more caring society" that became the pride of most Canadians. Nellie continued in an active roll in politics until the late sixties when she diverted more of her energy and enthusiasm into being a grandmother. She and Roy devoted more time to travel including visiting her son Keith and his family when they were in Africa, England and China. Recently her stay in the Mayerthorpe Extendicare was made more pleasant by the kind and helpful care provided by all the staff. The daily visits by her devoted sister were of great comfort and deeply appreciated by her family. Nellie is survived by her loving son, Keith and his wife Shirley of Nelson, B.C.; sister Maria Keeley of Mayerthorpe; brother Jack Sherratt of Edmonton; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A service in celebration of her life, lead by George Fitzsimmons will be held at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709-111 Avenue, Edmonton on Friday, October 25, 1996 at 1.30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Park Memorial Ltd, Mayerthorpe. [3]
