Biography

John was born in 1877 at Frovi, Sweden. He married Amelia Olson in Norway prior to immigrating to Canada about 1906. His siblings were Uina, Vilhelm, Amanda, Axel, Verner, Emil, Erik, August and Oscar (1892 to 1866). In the 1916 Census of Canada Prairies, a sister, Martha Evetius Peterson (1881) is listed as living with John.

Their daughter, ‘Margaret’ Gunvor Maria was born May 1, 1903 at Andenes, Nordland, Norway. She married Thomas Rupert Wickham, son of Rupert Woods Burton Wickham and Caroline Agnes Perring about 1928 when she was age 25 and they lived on the farm at Success, SK, Canada. Her son, Tom (Thomas) was born in 1929 and her son, Chuck (Charles), was born in 1930 in Vancouver, BC. They divorced when the children were young and Margaret primarily lived in Victoria, BC, Canada. She married Jim Atrill in 1957. Margaret and Jim travelled extensively before he died in 1961. Gunvor died in 1984 at age 81 at Ladysmith, BC, Canada.

Their daughter, Esther Hansina was born Aug 31, 1907 at Kenora, Ontario. Esther married SE Peterson and they had a daughter, Vicki. Esther died Aug 8, 1995 at Manitoba, and is buried in the Tyndall Cemetery, Tyndall, Manitoba.

In 1909 John and his family crossed the Winnipeg, MB - USA border on their way to Fort Dodge, Iowa. John was age 30, Amelia was age 33, Gunvor was age 5 and Esther was age 1. Their last residence was Kenora, Ontario. They had no relatives in Canada at that time.

Their son, Werner, was born 1910 in Manitoba. He was still living in 1961.

In 1911, John was age 34 and living with his wife, Amelia (age 33), and his children Gunvor (age 8), Esther (age 4) and Vina (Werner age 1) at Selkirk, Manitoba, Canada. John was a labourer in a quarry. Note: Census includes ‘Vina’ a female born in November 1909 and Werner is not on the census.

Their daughter, Selma, was born Jul 5, 1912 in Manitoba, Canada. She married Lorrie? Nagy and had two sons, Wayne and Gary. She died May 21, 2006 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Their daughter, ‘Judy’ Judith was born in1914 in Manitoba. She married George McTavish. She was still living in 1961.

In 1916, John was age 38, and living with his wife, Amelia (age 39), and children, Gunvor (age 13), Esther (age 4), Werner (age 6), Selma (age 4) and Judith age 2 at Brokenhead, Manitoba. He was a labourer in a quarry.

Their daughter, Martha Evelyn, was born May 27, 1916 in Manitoba. She married Dan Hawthorne and had children, Dan, Jack, Jim and Gail. She died May 21, 2006 at Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Their son, John, was born in 1920 in Manitoba. He was still living in 1961.

In 1926, John was age 49 and living with his wife, Amelia (age 50), and children Esther (age 18), Werner (age 17), Selma (age 14), Judith (age 12), Martha (age 10) & John (age 6) at Brokenhead, Manitoba. Their eldest daughter, ‘Margaret’ Gunvor, was probably living in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

John died in 1951 and is buried in Tyndal, Manitoba. Amelia died Jan 6, 1961 at Winnipeg, Manitoba and is also buried in Tyndal, Manitoba.
