Note
There have been questions as to the marriage of John Cunningham and Mary Peterson as no government records have been found to date. I have kept this connection because of the Family Legend behind it. Both of the Hinkle and Peterson lineages list Mary Peterson as the wife of John Cunningham with Mary being captured by the Shawnee during the 1758 raid. Mary Peterson Cunningham was said to have given birth to their daughter, while in captivity in Ohio. Mary Peterson Cunningham later escaped/was returned to South Branch where she later married Sylvester Ward. Mary's married to Ward was in 1762 is in the same date range as the deed of 1761 to Mary Cunningham for Walnut Bottom land and the 1762 deed fo James Cunningham also for Walnut Bottom land. Her daughter Mary Cunningham m. Isaac Hinkle. I believe that this Family Legend is strong enough to have survived retelling through the years and as the other facts surrounding this legend, the capture - the return - the marriages - the deeds, can be proved I believe that the marriage to John Cunningham is also true ... but it still remains just a believe by me. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:
