Biography

William Reuben Peterson, known as "Crippled Rube", was disabled by rheumatism. After moving to Asheville, he operated a shoe repair shop at the railroad depot. He owned several rental houses and a farm in Leicester Township when he died. W. R. and his wife Ella had no children, howe ver they adopted Thelmer Ruby, supposed to be the illegitimate daughter of his brother, Robert Clingman. Thelmer inherited an estate from them valued at $2800 in 1940. Thelmer was actually the daughter of Ellen Justus and Liffus Pate (Ellen told this to Bob Peterson before she died.
