Biography

Jean Jacques was born about 1717. He was the son of Nicolas Francois Petitpas and Magdaleine Simon. He was baptized around 1726 in Port-Toulouse. [1]

He married Marie Jeanne Darembourg around 1748 in Acadie and was revalidated on 20 August 1749 at Louisbourg. [1][2] It was noted that he was from Petit-Dégrat.

In 1758, the family was deported from Ile Royale or Ile Saint-Jean to France aboard L'Antelope. They disembarked at Saint-Malo on 1 November 1758. [3]

On February 10, 1763, the treaty of Paris ends the Seven Years’ War. Many Acadians in exile in France and elsewhere, decided to find a better life in French-controlled colonies. The Petitpas family decided to go to French Guiana. They left France after the birth of their daughter Jacquette Henriette in April 1763, and were in Guiana before November 1764 when her grave was blessed in Sinnamary.

Jean-Jacques lost his wife in December 1764. He appeared on a census in Sinnamary in 1765 with 4 children. [4] Also on the census was Jean-Jacques' sister Marie Petitpas, age 33. She was a witness at the marriage of her niece Cécile Petitpas in 1774.

He passed away on 19 June 1765 in Sinnamary, Cayenne, French Guiana, aged about 48 years old. [5][1]
