Mrs. Clara Petrie Wakeman, aged eighty-six, for many years a resident of Herkimer, sister of the Rev. Dr. Edward G. Petrie, former pastor of the First Presbyterian church in Cooperstown, died early Sunday morning, July 28th at her home, 418 N. Main street, after a long illness. In failing health for some time, she had been confined to her bed for about a week. She was well known in this village where she had been a frequent visitor. Mrs. Wakeman was born in Volney, March 7, 1854, daughter of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Agar Petrie, her father being a descendant of the Petrie family, prominent in valley history. He Was at that time pastor of the Volney Presbyterian church. She spent her early childhood there, going to Herkimer in 1864 when Mr. Petrie assumed the Reformed church pastorate, and was baptized in the local church. The following year, 1865, Mr. Petrie assumed another pastorate. For some years, Mrs. Wakeman lived in the vicinity of Syracuse. Later married to Ward Wakeman, she made her home for some time on the Wakeman farm off the Little Falls-Herkimer Rd. Mr. Wakeman died some years ago, and Mrs. Wakeman eventually returned to Herkimer. A constant reader, she was frequently able to go through a book in a day, and had nearly exhausted the resources of the Herkimer Free library. She was always interested in the ideas of other people, whether expressed in conversation or through the pages of a book. Her only survivors are two brothers, Charles Petrie, Elmira, and the Rev. Dr. Edward C. Petrie, formerly of Cooperstown, now residing near Philadelphia, Pa., two nephews, Frederick Petrie, New York, and John, Philadelphia, and a niece, also of Philadelphia. The funeral was held at 2 p. m. Monday at the Reformed church with the Rev, Martin A. de Wolfe officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery.
