Biography

Jessie was born about 1874 at St Pancras, Middlesex. She is a daughter of John H. and Emily J. Petrie.

At the 1881 census Jessie (7) and family were resident at Cedar Cottage, Bentley, Alton, Hampshire. Her father John (35, born at Sydenham, Kent) was described as a Retired American banker. Her mother Emily (33, born Binsted, Hampshire) and siblings Evelyn M (5) and Alexander S (2) were also present - both also born at St Pancras, Midlesex. there were three resident servants.

At the 1891 census Jessie's family were living at 5 South Cliff, Eastbourne, Sussex. Present are father John (45 and still described as retired), mother Emily (43), Jessie (17), Evelyn (15), Alex (12), sister Alice (8) and brother John (7). The latter two new arrivals are both transcribed as having been born in Benting, Hampshire - no such place, this should read Bentley. Resident also are four servants and a French teacher.

In 1898 Jessie Graham Petrie married Dr Arthur Gervase Hendley. Their marriage was registered at Eastbourne, Sussex in the third quarter of the year. At the time Arthur was a surgeon in the Indian Medical Service of the British army.

A son, John Hendley, was baptised on 30 July 1905 at St Stephen's, Ealing, Middlesex. The family were staying at 6 Cleveland Road, Ealing at the time.

Jessie's husband died in 1932.

Jessie died in 1945. She was 74. Her death was registered at Alton, Hampshire in the second quarter of the year.
