Biography

The Tumut Advocate and Farmers and Settlers' Adviser (NSW : 1903 - 1925) Tuesday 14 July 1908

Death of Mrs. Thomas McLaren. AFTER six weary years of suffering and bodily troubles there passed away at noon on Tuesday last, Ellen, the beloved wife of our respected townsman, Mr. Thomas McLaren, at the advanced age of 82 years. The cause of death was senile decay. One by one the dear old friends of long ago are stepping off the stage of life, to join the unnumbered thousands on the borderland of Time, regretted by all. But there are exceptions; and where we find an octogenarian who, with her husband, was a pioneer, counsellor, and righteous advisor to hundreds of the present Tumut population for upwards of fifty years, it gives us cause to ponder and say we part with her with the deepest regret. In 1856, the deceased lady, whose maiden name was Petrie, arrived in Tumut from Melbourne and joined Mr. McLaren in wedlock, and they have resided ever since on the site of their comfortable home next to the School of Arts. There were five children by the union, one of which, Margaret, died about six years ago, the shock of which was so great to Mrs. McLaren than she never overcame its effects. Dr. Mason did all that was possible to relieve the patient during her years of suffering, and a couple of days before her demise found that his further aid would be unavailing and bade Mr. McLaren and family prepare for the worst. There are left behind to mourn the loss of a devoted wife and prudent mother, a widower, one son (Mr. Walter McLaren, headmaster at the Maitland Public School) and three daughters (Mrs. P. C. Reid, " Marmsbury," Kyneton, Vic., Mrs. C. Carr and Miss M. McLaren (Tumut). The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon the remains being laid to rest in the Presbyterian portion of the Old Cemetery.
