Biography
Laurentius was born in 1529 or 1530 as Lars, son of bourgoisie Per, in Söderköping, Östergötland, Sweden.
Education and Early Career
Lars' first teacher was Ericus Petri, who later became the private tutor of duke Erik. In July 1546 Lars started his studies in Wittenberg, sponsored by the duke. The studies were interrupted by war and during the 1550's he worked as a preacher at court but in April 1557 Lars could once again study in Wittenberg which he finished in February 1558. He worked as a teacher, in the town where he had studied, for some years before returning to Sweden. In 1562 he left for Rostock where he studied for David Ghytræus. Laurentius had returned to Sweden in 1565 and became a professor in Greek in 1566, followed by becoming principal of the university of Uppsala before 1572.
In Wittenberg Laurentius had had Philip Melanchthon as a teacher and agreed with his views on reformation. In Sweden he preached humanism and education, just like Melanchthon.
Family and Archbishop
Laurentius married Margareta Larsdotter Phase, daughter of the archbishop Laurentius Petri Nericius, and together they had at least two daughters, where Elisabet is the only one known by name. When Margareta's father died in 1573 Laurentius was chosen to become the next archbishop with the help of the king. In order to achieve this, the king forced him to agree to 17 articles that would make the church more catholic. Laurentius agreed to some of the changes with the beliefs that he would be able to make good compromises. In 1578 he realised, however, that there were several people who in reality were disguised Catholics. The leader was suspended from any kind of religious work and Laurentius made clear that offerings at mass and the worshiping of saints were not to be tolerated. The king became furious and closed off Laurentius' income.
Laurentius died February 12, 1579, in Uppsala.
