Disputed Origins

A previous version of this profile claimed she was the daughter of Thomas Pettus and Ka-Okee Powhatan (supposed daughter of Pocahontas). Read those profiles and associated G2G discussions for why we have detached her from these parents.

Bottom line: There is nothing to suggest in any record that Christian was the daughter of Thomas Pettus. Her place of birth is also unknown as is the place of her marriage, both of which could have occurred in England, Virginia or elsewhere.

Biography

Christian_____Martin Waddington was born about 1637.[1] This information comes from her testimony during a 1687 court case regarding land that had belonged to John Martin. It was apparently sold twice (at the same time) to two different parties. In her deposition she testified that she was 50 years old:

"Christn. Waddington aged Fifty yeares or thereabouts Depons. that John Smith for and on behalfe of Ann his Wife an Infant undr ye age of twenty & one yeares Daughter to John Axton late of Stafford County deced agt John Gowry …" The court case involved men who worked on her unnamed husbands land in Stafford County. Because she is the one testifying, unusual that a woman would testify about business arrangements, it would appear that the husband she is speaking about is dead.

Based on a deposition by Ann Martin McPherson in 1730 it appears this husband was John Martin since Ann confirmed her parentage in the deposition: February the 5th 1730/1 The Deposition of Ann Mackferson of Stafford County aged about 63 years the Deponent… being duly sworn sayeth that Frances Golber came to her and asked her whether or no she was the Daughter of Francis Warrington’s wife which the aforesaid Ann said she was then replyed Frances Golber you are my own Cousin for your mother & my mother is two sisters. Deponent further sayeth that her mother which was then Warrington’s wife but sometime before had been the wife of John Martin deceased informed her at several times that Francis Golber was her own Sisters child & the Deponent further declareth that the aforesaid Francis (Golber) which was after the wife of Thomas White deceased always acknowledged Warrington’s wife to be her Aunt & futher the deponent sayeth not…. Ann x Mackferson 5th February 1730 Ann Mackferson came ….made oath which on motion of John Jones admitted to record. [2]

It appears that John and Christian Martin had at least three children who are identified in records: John Martin Jr., Anne Martin Hubbard Watts McPherson, and Christian Martin Williams Waugh Hawkins.

John Jr was named in the will of cousin Frances Golber/White/Lampton 24 Apr 1716 “cousin John Martin Jr. the tract of land where Richard Craford is now living.” Wits: Mary Martin, Thomas MacDunin, Elizabeth Spears. The will also made a bequest to "cousin Francis Martin the tract of land where James Clark is now living." it is unclear whether this Francis was a full sibling of John Martin, Jr., or perhaps was Francis Waddington, Jr. [3]

In a court record from 1727 Anne acknowledged the right of John Martin, Jr. to land in King George county that her husband, Daniel McPherson, had purchased from Francis Waddington [unclear whether Sr or Jr, both were dead at this point] even though Francis on his deathbed said the land should belong to John Martin, Jr. [4] This Indenture made 6th November 1727 between DANIEL McPHERTIAN and ANN his wife of Stafford County and JOHN MARTIN of County King George Witnesseth that Daniel McPhertain and Anne his wife doth acknowledge the gift being his desire of 100 acres for ever to the said John Martin adjoining and being the back of Seldens line the land that said Daniel purchased from FRANCES WADDINGTON sold it by deed .. to hold the 100 acres hereby made as a gift on his death bed to said John Martin his heirs forever by the evidence of ANN McPHERTAIN and JACOB WATS her son and JOHN SIMSON the son of SAMUEL SIMSON This acknowledgment made between Ann McPhertain of one part and John Martin of King George County witnesseth that Ann McPhertain doth acknowledge the right of the land mentioned to said John Martin against me the said Ann McPhertain. Presence Jacob Watts, Ann McPhertain John x Simson his mark, James Robertson At Court held for Stafford County 9th November 1727 Ann McPhertain acknowledged her deed of gift .. admitted to record

Francis Waddington arrived in Virginia abt. 1667, named in a deed to John Mathews for transporting him. Francis recieved a land grant in 1694. "Francis Waddington Wrnt 4 Oct 1694 to Mr. George Brent Jr returned 19 Dec with Surv of 500 A on Potomack Cr. in Stafford County adj. Mr. Thomas Matthews formerly Yeo’s line of Motts, Edward Wheeler. 21 Dec 1694 " [5] Ch"ristian and Francis had a son, also named Francis: "11 March 1686/7 Memorandum that then Lt. Coll. Fitzhugh did freely clearly and absolutely in cond of his good Will and affection which he bearish towards Francis Waddington sone of Francis Waddington of Pottomack Creek give unto him his Exrs. For Ever one Redde Heifer three yeares old called Cherry marked of the said Francis Waddington the Eldr marke and all her Encrease both male and female and 1 doe desire this might be recorded in the County Court Records of Stafford for the proper use of the said Francis Waddington Junr the day and yeare first above written." [6]

Francis Sr's land was sold by his son Francis Jr. in 1701. [7] “John Trammill of Stafford sells to John Roberts of this same county 100 a on the south side of Potomac Creek, part of a tract granted Francis Waddington now decd, and sold by his son Francis Waddington to the sd. Trammill.” Francis Jr. identifies his wife as Joanne [she was the widow of a man named James Monk]. His mother is presumed to be Christian. She is probably also dead as she is not mentioned in the deed of sale.

Pettus-804 and Unknown-332659 appear to represent the same person because: Clearly meant to be the same person. Zero evidence that Christian was a Pettus (and plenty of evidence that she wasn't)

I'm attaching a link to a profile created on 5 March 2024, that looks like this person, I didn't put in a merge, figured you needed to look at it first. Christian Pettus (1636-1701)

except the real Christian - wife of John Martin and then Francis Waddington - didn't have a daughter named Martha. This appears to be part of a convoluted myth attaching people to Pocahontas via mythical women.

Note: the Find-a-Grave shouldn't be your source of record, I'm attaching the profile of the mother mentioned on Find-a-Grave: Ka Okee Powhatan (abt.1611-abt.1636) and according to the profile she may not have been a real person. Here is the link to Powhatan Amonute Matoaka (Powhatan) Rolfe (abt.1596-1617)

Is there any additional sources to prove she is Pocahontas' daughter. The Find-a-Grave only has a family tree record, but no additional sources.

I've added a lot more detail to this profile to support spouses and children.

Harumph; I'd like to add Pettus as an uncertain other last name, but already there is Martin (her first married name, which is certain). While we can have multiple other last names in the same field, there is no way to have an uncertain and certain name in the same field. Harumph.
