Biography

Ann was born about 1760. She passed away after1793.

In Walter Garland Duke's 1949 book he states Clevears Duke Sr. married Ann Overton Pettus, but also points out that there are dependencies between whether it was Clevears Duke Sr. or Jr. who actually married her. [1] Clevears Duke Sr's son James Duke also had a son named Clevears Duke. It was Clevears Duke's sister Amdediah 'Amy' Duke married Samuel Overton Pettus. Too much coincidence that both have a middle name of Overton and it resolves the conflict that Walter Garland Duke had in his 1949 book.

In 1792 Louisa VA Personal Property tax records there are three Clevears Duke's. One for the Clevears Duke Estate, and two living Clevears Dukes located in separate lists. The Clevears Duke (son of James) who married Ann Pettus first appears in the Albemarle VA Personal Property Tax lists in 1793.

Clevears Duke and Ann his wife sell their land in Albemarle, VA, and Louisa, VA, and Campbell VA to Nelson Burruss (husband of Lucy Burnley Duke) and Archibald Duke their land in return for support for the remaining portions of their lives.[2]

Pettus-540 and Pettus-299 appear to represent the same person because: In Walter Garland Duke's 1949 book he states Clevears Duke Sr. married Ann Overton Pettus, but also points out that there are dependencies between whether it was Clevears Duke Sr. or Jr. who actually married her. Clevears Duke Sr's son James Duke had a son named Clevears Duke. His sister Amdediah 'Amy' Duke married Samuel Overton Pettus. Too much coincidence that both have a middle name of Overton and it resolves the conflict that Walter Garland Duke had in his 1949 book
