AUGUSTUS "GUS" KARL JULIUS PETZOLT, son of Johann Karl August Petzolt and Amelia Henrietta (Dehmel) Petzolt, born in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, 5 July 1883; died Jamaica, Queens County, New York, 6 September 1959, age 76; buried Long Island National Cemetery (Section T, Site 2415), Farmingdale, Suffolk County, New York; Episcopalian; soldier, laborer, brass molder; married in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, 10 September 1906, Anna Elizabeth Wilson.

Augustus Karl Julius Petzolt went by 'Gus' and also 'Carl.' His Army enlistment papers show him as 'Augustus J'. The 1917 Connecticut Military Census has 'Gus' crossed off and 'Augustus written in. The 1910, 1920, 1930 Census have 'Carl', while the 1900 Census has 'Julius C.'

The Register of Enlistments, 1901 and 1904, describes Gus with blue eyes, dark brown hair, and 5'-8" tall. His WW II draft registration card describes him as, Height: 5'-9" Weight: 152 lbs. Eyes: Blue, Hair: Gray Other obvious physical characteristics: one leg.

Gus served as a Private in the US Army after the Spanish American War. His “Descriptive and Assignment Card of Recruit” dated April 24, 1901 has Character as Good, and under Scars and marks, as shown on enlistment paper, includes American Flag in red and blue tattoo on right forearm, scar 3/8” left thumb, scar 3/8” left ring finger, and scar 1/4” left little finger.

Albert A. Haviland remembered visiting his Uncle Gus a few times in New York City as a child. Albert's parents (Harold and Freda (Petzolt) Haviland) would drive from Stamford to New York City to visit Gus.

1901, April 24. U.S. Army Enlistment, Stamford, Connecticut. Served as Private in Company 80 (then Company 114), Coastal Artillery Corps, Fort Schuyler, New York. Discharged April 30, 1904 at Fort Totten, New York, New York.[8][12]

1904. Gus is living with his parents at 18 Cedar Street, Stamford and employed at Yale and Towne Manufacturing Company, Stamford.[13]

1904, April 22. U.S. Army Enlistment, New York. Served as Private in Company 98, Coastal Artillery Corps. Discharged September 21, 1907 at Fort Hamilton, New York, New York.[8][12]

1906, Sep 10. Marriage of Augustus Karl Julius Petzolt and Anna Elizabeth Wilson in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.[2][14]

1910, Apr 21. U. S. Federal Census. The Petzolt family renting at 18 Adams Avenue, Stamford. Head of household Carl [Gus] Petzolt, age 26, laborer; wife Anna, age 23; daughter Violet, age 2; brother-in-law Frederick Smith, age 26, laborer lock shop; sister-in-law Sarah Smith, age 20; nephew Frederick Smith, age 2; niece Margaret Smith, age 10/12. Third family in the house is sister Annie, age 20, with husband Homer Mallory, age 23, chauffeur private family. Gus and family lived at 16 Adams Avenue until 1913.[2]

1910 – 1911. Gus is working at 252 Atlantic Street, Stamford. The name of the business is not given. However, in 1914 this was the address of the Burdett-McGillivray Dry Goods.[13]

1912 – 1917. Gus was employed at Yale and Towne Manufacturing Company in Stamford.[13]

1913, February 3. The 16th Amendment to the Constitution made income tax a permanent part of the United States tax system. Wikipedia.

1914 – 1917. Living at his brother's house at 17 Cedar Street, Stamford.[13]

1914 – 1918. World War I. "With five major European nations committed within a few days to hostilities, World War I begins." History World.

1917, Feb 23. Connecticut Military Census of 1917 has Gus' address as 17 Cedar St., Occupation is Brass Moulder, previous occupation is chauffeur. He is 5'-9 3/4" and weighs 160 pounds. He is married with six dependents. He was a private in the CAC for 6 years.[6]

1918. Gus and family remove to Long Island, New York.[13]

1918. The flush toilet gains in popularity in the United States after World War I, when American troops came home from England full of talk about a "mighty slick invention called the crapper." (The name derives from Thomas Crapper who was instrumental in the development of the modern flush toilet.) The History of the Flush Toilet.

1918, Sep 12. Gus's World War I Draft Registration Card has him living at 139 Linden Avenue, Flushing, Queens, New York. His point of contact is Annie Elizabeth Petzolt at the same address. Occupation is Brass Molder for Leonard Plumbing Supply Company at 313 E. 22d Avenue, New York City. He has brown eyes and gray hair. (His World War II draft registration has his eyes as blue. One of these registration cards is in error, or Gus had a blue/gray/hazel coloring that was open to interpretation).[9]

1919, January 29. Ratification of the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which banned the manufacture, transportation and sale of intoxicating liquors brought in the period known as the Prohibition. 1942, Apr 27. Gus's World War II Draft Registration Card has him living at 7-10 – 122d Street, College Point, Queens, New York. His point of contact is Anna Petzolt at the same address. Date and place of birth given as 5 Jul 1883 Stamford, CT. He is unemployed, height is 5' – 9”, weight 152 pounds, light complexion, blue eyes, gray hair, and has one leg.[10]

1959, Sep 6. Death of Augustus Karl Julius Petzolt in Jamaica, Queens, New York. Residence at death was 41 Salem Road, Hicksville, Oyster Bay, Nassau County, New York. Gus was buried in the Long Island National Cemetery (Section T, Site 2415), Farmingdale, Suffolk, New York.[7][8]

NEW YORK, N. Y., Sept. 8 -- Services for August Petzolt, of College Point, a former resident of Stamford, who died here yesterday, will take place tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in the Weigand Brothers funeral home, 49 Hillside avenue, Williston Park. Burial will be in Pine Lawn National cemetery, New York.
Mr. Petzolt is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ann Petzolt; four sons, Walter, of North Babylon, N. Y., Milford of Locust Valley, N. Y., Clifford, of College Point, N. Y., and Fred Petxolt, of Williston Park, N. Y.; two daughters, Mrs. John Eberhardt, of Hicksville, N. Y., and Mrs. Jack Alben, of Maupin, Oregon; a brother, William Petzolt, of Point Beach, Milford; three sisters, Mrs. Magnus Anderson, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Mrs. Selma Carpenter, of Florida, and Mrs. Harold Haviland, of Stamford; 16 grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.[15]
