Biography

Eliza Pevyhouse was born about 1830[1]. She married William Thomas Coats on 3 Jan 1851[2]. They had 7 children[3]. The family moved from Alabama to Coal Hill, Johnson County, Arkansas between 1854 and 1856[3] as part of a migration of several families from the Rock Creek community and the Church of Christ in Rock Creek. Some time around 1863, her husband William died. According to family lore, soldiers tried to conscript him to fight in the war, but the doctor stopped them.[2] By 1870, the family had moved back to Rock Creek (now Colbert County, Alabama). Eliza was baptized at the Rock Creek Church of Christ on 4 Aug 1873.[2] The last known record of her is in 1910 living with her son Felix.[4] It is supposed she died between 1910 and 1920. She is believed to be buried at the Rock Creek Church of Christ in an unmarked grave.[2]

Notes

Her name is listed on the census as Eliza, Elisia, Ann, and "Eliza A" so I have listed her as Eliza Ann. The previous version of this page had her name as Eliza Jane. (from Blankenship-2827)

The death certificate for her youngest son William Lafayette Coats lists her name as Eliza Ann.

There is an 18 year old Peavyhouse with Daniel Peavyhouse in Perry County, Tennessee, also in 1850. Her name looks like it could be "Elizabeth" or "Elizabetta" but it is very hard to read. (It looks like one name was written over another.) Could this be her, enumerated twice in 1850 with slight variations in age?

In 1830 (one year before Eliza's birth) there are two Pevehouses on the census for Perry Co., Tn - John and Daniel, presumed to be brothers. In 1840 they are both still in Perry Co., TN and both have a daughter between 10 and 15 so either could be her father.

In 1850, she (age 20) is listed in the census with John Kenady (86) and his daughter Davina (46). Since her son Felix had the middle name Kenady, it is supposed that she had some close connection with the Kenady/Kennedy/Canady family.

In 1860 Daniel Pevehouse is still in Perry Co., TN w/ wife Laurette b. ~ 1805 - age 55, could she be the daughter of the 1850 John Kenady and sister of Davina?

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Eliza by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Eliza:

She is always listed in the census as Eliza or Ann, never Elizabeth.
