Malet is currently shown as the daughter of Pagan Peverell, born 1060, and Elise Crispin, born 1038. No sources have yet been found for this, and the birth year for Elise, an entire generation earlier than that of her husband, is questionable.
The historians of Whittington Castle, however, present Mellet's father as William Peverel: William Peverel built the Norman Motte and Bailey castle after the demolition of the previous stronghold built at the time of King Offa, probably of wood with a stockade of sharp posts. [1]
William Peverel had no male heir so his eldest daughter Mellet inherited the castle. The victor of a tournament for her hand in marriage was Warin de Metz of Lorraine who founded a long line of Fitzwarines. They held the castle until 1420. [1]
Material about Malet's romance with Warin appears on a Geneagraphie site without further sourcing. Material such as this might, however, have been transmitted orally for several generations because of its engaging character, and might have some basis in fact. Malet Peverel married Warin of Metz, who was born 1078 and died 1115. Warin was formerly Sheriff of Gloucester and counselor to the Earl of Shrewsbury. Warin heard that Malet, the daughter of William, a valiant knight, had resolved to marry none but a knight of great prowess. Warin took up the challenge of winning the lady, and beating a Prince of Scotland and a Baron of Burgundy, obtained both Malet and the manor of Whittington. [2]
Warine, second of that name, and husband of Miletta Peverell, must have died in or prior to 1156, as will appear from a document hereafter referred to: the numberf of his children is not given; but two of his sons, Fulk Fitz-Warine, the second of that name, and Richard Fitz-Warine, are mentioned in a deed of confirmation of lands to the abbey of Haghmond by Reiner bishop of St. Asaph, who appointged to that see in 1186. [3]
Fulk I FitzWarin, was born 1108 and died 1171. He was the son of Guarine de Meer and Mallet Peverel [2] Fulk married first Miletta de Whittington and secondly Eva. They were the parents in turn of Fulk II FitzWarin, b. abt 1145 Whittington, Shropshire, d. 1198, Sussex. [2]
Sir Fulk II Fitz Warin, born 1138. Died 1195. Son of Fulk and Eva. Married Hawise de Dinham (daughter of Josce de Dinham) and had son Fulk. Fulk was under the tutelage of Sir Josce de Dinham when he fell in love with and married Josce’s daughter Hawise, then proceeding with her father to Ireland to aid in the war against Walter de Lascie. In 1122 Fulk was constituted lieutenant of the Marches of Wales. Of this man it is said the ha had a falling out with Prince John (King Henry’s son) over a game of chess, and after the prince had thrown the chessboard at him, he returned the attack so violently he nearly killed his opponent.
