Biography

P. Ross Peyton was the son of Craven Peyton (1794 KY - 1833) & Sarah Fleming Paine (1795 VA - 1853 Shelby, TN). Craven & Sarah's other issue include: Emily Peyton (m . George Y. Smith), William Peyton, Mary Chichester Peyton (m. Unknown Peacock), Craven Peyton, Jr., Dr. Thomas Fleming Peyton (m. Martha Custis Woolsey), Valentine Miner Peyton, & Volney H. Peyton.

Note for Dr. Thomas Peyton - "History in Memphis Street Names" Paul Cappock, pg 109 Peyton Street, near the junction of North Parkway, Jackson and Thomas, seems to be near the downtown area but it marks what was once the Peyton family farm. There a boy cut cordwood and hauled it to Memphis to sell for his medical school money. He became Dr. Thomas F. Peyton and may have been the Dr. Peyton mentioned by Mark Twain in connection with the fatal injury of his brother as "a fine and large hearted old physician of great reputation in the community." Letter from Martha (Mrs. D.S.) Peyton Branch, Millington, Tenn, May 1954.

Note for Martha Custis Woolsey Peyton - During the Civil War when medicine was so scarce, Martha Woolsey Peyton slipped through the Yankee lines in Memphis to secure some badly needed quinine for her husband’s patients. She was able to get the medicine which she put in the hem of her petticoat but was caught by the Yankees and put in jail. Martha was forced to pledge allegiance to the U.S. Army before they would release her.

The Peyton families lived in the north & eastern areas of Shelby County. Many records of the them can be found in the "Memphis Room" of the Memphis & Shelby County Main library. Many of them were buried in the West Union Cemetery in Millington, TN.

The Peyton Society (2005) lists the family lineage back to Henry Peyton of Lincoln's Inn, London (1590-1656). Descendants of Presley Ross Peyton are eligible for membership in the Peyton Society of Virginia. Book - "PEYTONs Along the Aquia" by Edna Barney
