Henry is the 3rd son of Christopher Payton of Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk, England, and his wife Jone (daughter of Thomas Mildmay of Essex). He had 2 older siblings Thomas (The Heir) and Christopher and 7 younger siblings. Francis, Anne, Elizabeth, Rose, Mary, Margaret and Martha. [1] [2]
His older brother Thomas married in 1561 and his birth is estimated as 1536, since Henry was born after him, it could be estimated as between 1537-1550.
Henry became a Mercer that is a silk/textile merchant in London. London was the major trade centre in England for silk during the Middle Ages, and the trade had enjoyed a special position in the economy amongst the wealthy since the 12th Century, unfortunately the trade started falling off in the late 16th Century, which may explain why his son Walter decided to follow in his Uncle Henry's footsteps and became an adventurer, making his fortune as a privateer with the Dutch East India Company. VIsitation of Suffolk 1561 Page 56: Payton of Bury St Edmunds Son of Christopher Peyton of Bury St Edmunds and his wife Jone (daughter of Thomas Mildmay of Essex). Genealogy stated line goes back to Joh'es Peiton of Peiton Hall buried in Stoke Neyland.
Henry Peyton's lineage traces further back to King Edward I "Longshanks, King of England" Plantagenet. Having discovered a footnote in 'A genealogical and heraldic history of the landed gentry of Ireland by Burke, Bernard, Sir, 1814-1892; Fox-Davies, Arthur Charles, 1871-1928' I enquired with the [wikitreemagnacarta] project the one questionable link and discovered that his line does indeed trace back to King Edward I traceable here on Wikitree.

I am a member of the Payton/Peyton Name Study group and completed Walter Peyton's profile yesterday, discovering along the way that he is your Henry Peyton's son and attaching him. I also discovered a great deal of source material for Henry's profile. So on 1st May I intend to add a great deal of source material and information to this profile. I will not remove anything you have here already but will add the sources, writing the biography as I go (easiest way to make sense of the sources). I will also add Henry to the Peyton Name Study so other Payton/Peyton descendants like me, can find him more easily. I hope this is acceptable to you.
