Biography

When Phillip Peyton was born in May 1644 in Bisley, Gloucestershire, England, his father, Phillip, a Baliff, was 31 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 19. He married Mary Ann Elizabeth Rush on April 23, 1670. They had seven children in 15 years. He died in 1730 in Stafford, Virginia, having lived a long life of 86 years.

Philip Payton or Peyton was born about 1644 and passed away about 1730.[citation needed]

Philip was the son of Philip and Elizabeth (Gibbes) Peyton of Bisley, Gloucester.[1]

Phililp married Mary Rush, daughter of William and Ann (Grey) Rush[2] in 1678.[3]

Philip Peyton came to Va. Aug. 30, 1665 from Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. His children at least the older ones were born in Westmoreland Co., Va. Philip was given 200 acres of land by William Rush who called Philip Peyton his son in law who had intermarryed with his daughter, Mary Rush. This William Rush had been given land by father in law Francis Grey/Gray and his wife Alice Mooreman(to Maryland first)to William Rush son in law who had married the beloved daughter Anne of Francis Grey

Research Notes

I feel I would like to comment here, as although I have seen many trees with Phillip (b abt 1644 ) given as the son of Phillip b 1612 Bisley Gloucestershire, I have never seen any proof of his parentage - on the contrary I visited Gloucester Records Office some years ago and noted down baptisms for the children of Phillip from the transcripts of Bisley Baptism registers - they gave Elizabeth in 1639, Ann 1641, Mary 1643, Thomas 1646, Sara 1649, Charles 1652 and Deborah 1655, NO PHILLIP and no obvious gap.

There is a marriage bond for Phillip (b 1612)

1638 Phillip Payton of Bisley to Elizabeth Gibbs of Cirencester Bondsman Thomas Payton of Bisley aged 30

This fits well with the earlier baptisms of children of Thomas Payton in Bisley, 1607 Elizabeth, 1608 Thomas, 1610 Samuel, 1612 Phillip and 1615 Alice.

Does anyone have a reference to a piece of documentation which states that Phillip (b abt 1644) was the son of Phillip or might he have been the son of one of his brothers Thomas or Samuel?

Peytons of Virginia

See also profile for grandfather Thomas Peyton. More at Peytons of Virginia II, Vol. 2, p 166. - Line C: "indentured for four years and transported to Virginia from Bristol 30 Aug 1665."
Following (possibly from Peytons of Virginia also?) had been hidden text and seems to apply to Philip (not sure whether the preceding quote about transported in 1665 is for Philip or Thomas).
"He was appointed as constable, Westmoreland co., VA in 1683. In father's 1668 will; he was born May 1644 Bisley Parish, Gloucester, England; he married Mary Rush , daughter of William Rush and Ann Grey, before 23 Apr 1678 Washington Par., Westmoreland Co., VA; he died 1730, Stafford Co., VA; his estate was probated 1730 wd 1727.
"Mary Rush was born circa 1659 Northumberland, Westmoreland Co, VA. She died before 14 Jun 1705, Aquia, Stafford Co., VA.
"Children of Philip3 Payton (C-4) and Mary Rush were as follows:
"+ 15. i. Valentine4 Payton (C-41), born circa 1680 Washington Parish, Westmoreland Co, VA.
"16. ii. Philip Payton III.
"17. iii. Charles Payton.
"18. iv. Susannah Payton; Probably not the Susanna Peyton, baptized 20 Oct 1686, Hinton on the Green, Gloucester, England as this Philip and Mary were already in VA."

See also information posted on this profile page from The Peytons of Virginia, Vol 1, Chapter 5, pp 18-19 (published by the Peyton Society of Virginia), including the following excerpt:

"The fourth Peyton immigrant, Philip Peyton (ca. 1645-1730) of Bisley, Gloustershire, England, left Bristol, England August 30, 1665. Court records place him in Northumberland County, Virginia as early as October 25, 1667 and until 1672. He appears in several 1667 court records. Prior to March 23, 1678, he married Mary Rush, daughter of William Rush and Ann Grey (daughter of Francis Grey, who had served with Valentine Peyton’s father-in-law Thomas Gerrard during the 1637-1643 era in the Council in Maryland.) Following his marriage, he was given 200 acres in Westmoreland County by his father-in-law William Rush. Philip purchased land in Stafford County by September 14, 1687 at the head of Potomac Creek, known by the name of Rock Point. Subsequently his name appears on a 1723 Quit Rent Roll and he was listed along with John Payton and Charles Payton as tobacco tenders in Overwharton Parish. His will is indexed in 1727 for the missing Stafford County Will Book. Most of Philip’s descendants moved to Kentucky via Amherst County, Virginia and many of our Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas Peytons stem from him. He was likely a kinsman of Henry Peyton (1590-1656) of Lincoln’s Inn, but this relationship has not been established."

When Philip (son of Philip a Baliff) Peyton was born in 1644 in Bisley, Gloucestershire, England, his father, Philip, was 31 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 19. He married Mary (dau Wm) (Mrs. Peyton) Rush and they had seven children together. He also had one son from another relationship. He died in 1728 in Stafford, Virginia, having lived a long life of 84 years.

"The Philip Peyton (C-4) to whom he [Hayden, I think] refers is given as being the son of Philip and Elizabeth (Gibbes) Peyton of Bisley, Gloucester. Philip (C-4)'s wife's name is given as Mary, and I [Mary Greg] _think_ this would be Mary Rush. Children of Philip (C-4) and Mary are given as: (i) Valentine (the one who was in Overwharton Parish); (ii) Philip; (iii) Charles; and (iv) Susannah

  3. if I read it right (from same source):
William and Anne Gray Rush II had two daughters: Elizabeth and Mary. After the marriage of Elizabeth to Jossua Hudson in 1674, William gave them the "same 100 acres that Francis Gray gave William Rush II and Anne Gray on 25 Nov 1658". [42] Anne Rush’s brother, Francis Gray Jr., and John Ashton were witnesses to this deed. Four years later after the marriage of Mary Rush to Philip Peyton (Payton), her father gave them 200 acres of "plantation land lying on the Beaver Damms of Upper Machodix {Machodoc Creek} .....commonly called The Newland.....". DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Philip by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Philip:

Peyton-1518 and Peyton-48 appear to represent the same person because: same birth information & text supports that these are duplicate profiles. Please merge. Thanks!

update: merge completed

Peyton-522 and Peyton-48 appear to represent the same person because: not sure how I overlooked this pair of duplicates before - thanks James McGehee for pointing them out. Nothing in profiles argues that they're different people, so please merge. Thanks!

Payton-680 and Peyton-48 appear to represent the same person because: Hi! These profiles are for the same person. I don't see documentation of either for the spelling, although info on Payton show Peyton primarily (might be Virginia bias). My branch of the Peytons tended to spell it Payton in England and Peyton in Virginia. Born in England/died Virginia, I think it can go either way lacking anything definitive in the way of a source. Cheers, Liz
