Biography

John was born about 1530. John Peyton ... He passed away in 1588. [1]

John is the earliest person to be mentioned in the 'Tardebigge Bible' - I found notes from this Bible at the Society of Genealogist when I visited in 1992.

They consist of 2 or 3 typewritten pages headed up "Details of entries made in the Cattespoole Tardebigge Peyton family bible. The Bible was printed in 1619 in the reign of James I. The following has been written in the blank pages of the Bible." There follows details of 10 generations of the family down to the children of Abel Peyton and Elizabeth Cobb who married in 1823 in Banbury. They end with the note that 'thiis family Bible was last heard of in the possesion of J.N. Peyton'.

The earlist entry is-

Richard Peyton son of John of Cabley (Cobley) in that part of the parish of Tardebigge that is in the county of Warwickshire, gentleman, was born in 1574 - purchased the Cattespoole Estate in 1622 and died in 1629 aged 65, his wife Ann was buried in Tardebigge May 1641.

....................................

John Peyton was married at least twice his second/last wife being Joane, I have attached notes from her will (at Worcester Records Office) which mikes it plain that Richard is her step-son, son-in-law was the common expression for stepson at that time, though it seems that the two daughters Elnor & Elizabeth who John also mentions are her children.

The registers for Tardebiige start in 1566 - I have found the following possible baptisms for children of John.

1567 Christopher (possible burial 1587) 1571 Ellinor 1574 Richard 1576 Joan 1578 Agnes (buried 1581) 1581 John (buried 1581) 1585 Thomas

If Richard was the son of John's first marriage it seems that the Ellinor baptised before him must have died for the Elnor & Elizabeth named in the wills to have been the children of his later marriage to Joan, I have not found baptisms for either of them but there is a marriage in 1589 in Tardebigge for Elizabeth Payton to Richard Taylor.

N.B. The Thomas Payton who died in 1568 at Tardebigge cannot be the brother of this John as John mentions his brother Thomas in his 1588 will
