Biography

George Fennig was born in Alsace, France in 1818, the son of Johann Georg Pfennig (1794-1837) and Marie Menchhofer (1797-1870).

He married Barbra Bastian on Dec 24 1840 in Mercer, OH. They were the parents of the following children, per FamilySearch:

  1. Mary Elizabeth Fennig 1841-1919
  2. Anna M. Fennig 1844-1865
  3. Salome Fennig 1846-1919
  4. Caroline Fennig 1848-1910
  5. George W. Fennig 1852-1932
  6. Henry Jacob Fennig 1854-1938
  7. John F. Fennig 1855-1940
  8. Lewis Philip Fennig 1859-1938
  9. Solomon David Fennig 1861-1939
  10. James Edward Fennig 1865-1946

The 1860 census indicates that children Mary through George were born in Ohio, but starting with Henry (after about 1853) they were born in Jay, Indiana.

From FamilySearch:

George Fennig Jr. sympathized with those who struggled with their hands. He had a difficult struggle with poverty in his youth. When he was married to Barbara Bastian, he had nothing, not even the money with which to buy a cook stove. Only his hard work, thrift, incredible will and untiring perseverance enabled him to claim victory. However, he was successful owning at one time 460 acres of land which he divided among his children during his life.
Mr. Fennig was a man who stood well with his neighbors and made strong and lasting friendships. He possessed a broad understanding of things in general and was a very capable business man. He was appointed Superintendent of the Reservoir at Celina, Ohio and served in that capacity for four years. He was chosen for several years of service as Trustee of Wabash Township and discharged the duties imposed in a manner which inspired the confidence and esteem of even the most critical.

He died in 1895 and is buried in the Zion State Line Cemetery, Padua, Mercer, OH.
