Biography

Isaac Phelps was born in 1722 (or 1724) in Windsor, Connecticut, probably to Cornelius Phelps and Sarah (Mansfield) Phelps.[1],[2],[3] Please see the Research Notes section below for further explanation.

Marriage and Family

Isaac married Martha Mills in 1745.[1] The couple had several children, but the who they were is subject to further study and resolution.

Issac resided in Hartford, Simsbury, and Poquonock, Connecticut.[1] He died in 1777.[1]

Research Notes

Parentage for Dr. Isaac Phelps

Phelps and Servin treat as fact that this Issac Phelps was the son of Cornelius Phelps. However, H.R. Stiles treats the relationship as probable but not certain. The reason for the ambiguity is that the Isaac Phelps who married Martha Mills was known as "Doct. Isaac Phelps," but also signed his name as "Isaac Phelps the second" and "Isaac Phelps, Jr." There is some confusion as between this Isaac Phelps and an Isaac Phelps from the line of George Phelps. Perhaps genetic evidence may one day provide further insight.

Which Issac Phelps as Son

A reference from the late 1800s attributes Isaac Phelps who married Jemima Holcomb, Anna Brown, and Joanna Hathaway as the son of Dr. Isaac Phelps and Martha Mills.[3]. However, according to Phelps and Sevin, this Isaac Phelps' parents were Isaac Phelps (b. Westfield 26 Jan 1962) and Widow Sarah Palmer (dau. Timothy Palmer of Windsor).[4]

A 2009 study from N.J. Pennington suggests that this Isaac Phelps is appropriately the son of Dr. Isaac Phelps and Martha Mills. For now, on this Phelps-1650 listed as the child for Phelps-1708. Please do not add/remove/change the sons Isaac before further discussion.

Other Children of Dr. Isaac Phelps

There appears to be no specific source that provides that Sarah (Phelps) Case is the daughter of this Issac Phelps, so she is removed as the daughter of this Isaac Phelps.

Neither Phelps & Sevrin (1899) or Stiles (1892) list Tryphenia (Phelps) Barber (m. Daniel Barber) as a daughter of this Isaac Phelps and Martha Mills, but in 2009 the New England Historical and Genealogical Register lists her as the daughter of this couple based on a reference to a Tryphenia Phelps as granddaughter of Peletiah Mills. This same NEHGR edition also makes the case that Clarry (or Clara) Phelps as listed by Phelps and Servin was the daughter of "Isaac Phelps of Turkey Hills" which is more clear.

Phelps-9628 and Phelps-1708 appear to represent the same person because: Both have the same vitae, linked / married to same spouse

Phelps-9628 and Phelps-1708 are not ready to be merged because: Death dates are not the same. Profile for Phelps-9628 was created a few weeks ago, and then spouse of Phelps-1708 was just added to the profile of Phelps-9628 yesterday which may have been in error given the different dates of death for the two profiles.
