Biography

John Phelps was born on December 27, 1672, and baptized June 29, 1673, in Westfield, Massachusetts, to Issac Phelps and Ann(e) (Gaylord) Phelps.[1]

John married Thankful Hitchcock in 1711 and the couple settled in Westfield.[1],[2] The couple had several known children, including George Phelps, a daughter (b. 5 Jan 1714, d. same day), John Phelps, Jr. (b. 4 Mar 1715/16, thought to be an early settler of Great Barrington), Moses Phelps (b. 25 Oct 1718, d. 16 Mar 1743 unmarried), Thankful (Phelps) Ashley (b. 14 Sept 1721, m. Benjamin Ashley), Stephen Phelps (b. 22 Mar 1724, d. 8 Jul 1743), Sarah Phelps (b. 1 Feb 1725, d. 1 Apr 1743 unmarried), Ann (Phelps) Lee (b. 27 Jul 1728, m. 7 Oct 1747 to John Lee), and Luke Phelps (b. 28 Aug 1730, m. twice).[1]

John is referred to as Capt. John Phelps.[1] He served as the administrator of his brother Noah Phelps's estate.[1]

John passed away in Westfield in 1741.[1]
