Biography

From the probate of her estate: To the Honorable Samuel McNeil Judge of the Probate Court of Neshoba County Mississippi
The petition of M. B. Kirk resident of said county respectfully shows that Elizabeth Jones late of said county departed this life the 27th of April last leaving no will so far as your petitioner knows or believes. That said intestate died seized and possessed of a small real and personal estate consisting of a small tract of land in said county containing about one hundred & eight acres, four negro slaves young & old, a small stock of horses, cattle & hogs, some farming utensils and some debts due her evidenced by note and open accounts all of said personal estate being estimated to be worth not exceeding three thousand dollars. That your petitioner M. B. Kirk is the son-in-law of said intestate. That besides your petitioner’s wife the said decedent left seven other heirs & distributees to wit. Mary Jones, Elizabeth A. Underwood, Rose Ann Purvis wife of W. W. Purvis, Margaret McKee wife of John McKee, Julia McKee, wife of Thomas McKee, E. S. Jones & W. J. Jones and your petitioner’s wife D. H. Kirk, children of said decedant. That your petitioner also believing that said estate should be immediately administered as well for the proper management of said land, negros, etc as for the prompt collection of the other assets by virtue of his right under the statute, he therefore prays that your honor will grant letters of administration to him in the premises upon qualifying himself according to law and the direction of this court. Your petitioner begs leave to offer to the consideration of your honor, Z. Williams & W. A. Willing as Securities upon his bond & to nominate Joseph Morrow, D. McKee & M. Y. McDonald as appraisers to value etc the goods & chattels & personal estate of said intestate.
And as in duty bound your petitioners will ever pray etc.
