Leila Teresa Phelps was born on July 26, 1954 to C. Wayne Phelps, Attorney-at-Law and Patricia Orle Palmer, homemaker, in Compton, California. She was born at 8:11 AM and, coincidentally, weighed 8 lbs. 11 oz. She had three older sisters. They were Loris Gail Phelps (Pepperdine) age 15, Joanne Louise Phelps (Gilchrist) age 11, and Barbara Lyn Phelps (Rodriguez) age 8. The family lived at 1000 E. Peck Street in Compton until Wayne's death in 1983. Leila attended Augusta A. Mayo Elementary, Whaley Junior High School, both in Compton, and David Starr Jordan High School in Long Beach where she graduated in 1972. She went on to an Interdisciplinary Course of Study at The Small College but eventually earned a Bachelor's Degree in English Language Arts from Long Beach State University.

In 1978 she married Micheal Joseph Brandt, a mechanical engineer. They had two sons, Jacob Micheal Brandt born in 1980, and Gregory James Brandt, born in 1983. Leila and Mike lived first in Long Beach and later settled in Redondo Beach, California.

Professionally, Leila began by helping out in her father's legal practice as needed from time to time during her teens. After her marriage to Micheal she worked for a time as a technical writer for American Honda and then moved into working as a professional buyer for industry. First for Rachelle Laboratories in San Pedro, California and then for Deutsch Manufacturing in Gardena.

With the birth of her children she took a break from working until 1985 when she began working as a substitute teacher, primarily for the Lynwood Unified School District. In 1986 she became a full-time teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District teaching high school English. She taught very briefly at Locke Senior High School in South Central and then moved to Wilson High School in El Sereno where she stayed until 2000. After Wilson she taught at Carson High School until she retired from teaching in 2012.

Leila and Micheal divorced in 1998. She remarried in 1999 to Jerrold Edward Schutz. Leila and Jerry settled in Torrance, California.

I am a retired high school English teacher living in Southern California. My family is from Kansas/Missouri but I was born here. Our ancestry is woven throughout the history of the United States and I'm proud to say that I had ancestors in Jamestown and on the Mayflower. They have fought in every war we've struggled through. They came west in wagons, settling the prairies, and they followed the hunt for gold in the new territories.

I am most fascinated by immigrant stories and those of westward expansion. I have managed to trace my family back to England and other countries, even to royal lines, but I find those stories less interesting.

I am also extremely interested in DNA research.

I, Leila Schutz, have been asked to explain how I have confirmed DNA matches to both my mother and my father.

I have tested at ancestry.com, 23andme.com, ftdna.com and I have uploaded my raw data to gedmatch. My son, Gregory Brandt has tested on 23andme.com My full sister, Loris Pepperdine, has tested on 23andme.com Loris' daughter tested on 23andme.com as did her daughter and son. Another great-nephew, son of another of Loris' daughters, tested. Everyone matches everyone appropriately. I match my sister as a full sibling and my sister matches my son as his aunt. My sister and I have matched two maternal first cousins and other slightly more distant cousins on both our mother's Palmer (paternal) and Casad (maternal) sides. We have also match cousins on our Father's Daugherty (maternal) and Phelps (paternal) lines.

The format I've given here is probably not acceptable but the information is valid.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships by comparing test results with Leila or other carriers of her ancestors' mitochondrial DNA. Mitochondrial DNA test-takers in the direct maternal line:
  • Leila (Phelps) Schutz: Family Tree DNA mtDNA Test Full Sequence, haplogroup H36, FTDNA kit #M257065
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Leila:

Hi Leila, I am a little dubious on profile Margaret Manning-820 ever married Thomas Howard-8 ? Very little evidence showing if any at all.

Sorry Leila, I have no more information on John Rowland II and Margaret Bailey. I suppose it is possible that Elizabeth Rowland b. 1627 is their dau. If Margaret Bailey's birthdate is correct, she would have been very young.

There is much speculation as to the relationship of Sir Francis Drake to the Hawkins family. It is reported that brothers William & John Hawkins referred to him simply as "kinsman". 'Would love to hear from anyone with irrefutable information on this subject. Thanks.

Leila, to get your 23andMe mtDNA haplogroup to show up on the profiles for your maternal line ancestors, you need to add it as an additional DNA test. Go to Add > DNA Test Information, scroll down to the Add New Test form, and choose "Other mtDNA Test."

Welcome to the Mayflower Project. Please add MAYFLOWER to your list of followed tags. Coordination for the Mayflower profiles should be coordinated in g2g using the MAYFLOWER tag.
Hi Leila,

Now that you have had a little time to try WikiTree, here are a few more features you may find useful:

  • If you need to describe an event, an heirloom or a location relevant to your research, you may like to learn about Free Space Profiles.
  • Unfortunately, sometimes you'll run into unresponsive profile managers. We have a process for resolving these situations.

If you have questions, feel free to post them on my profile page or send me a private message.

I think what you are looking for is proof that she is the daughter. There is none but the idea that she was appeared in discredited works. But they offered no proof and no one has ever found proof. The most likely scenario is she is a relative, maybe a niece, of Abraham Mellowes which would mean no blood relationship to Martha.

Hi Leila,

If you go to our Help Index, there is a lot of great information under GEDCOM that you will find useful for GEDCOM imports to WikiTree. Here are two quick links: step-by-step of the process including screenshots that you might find helpful. 'Before you import a GEDCOM'.
