Research Notes

There is an ongoing research group of Phelps descendants who for many years have been working the multiple branches and off shoots using Y-DNA. I am genetically proven to be from this line by DNA submitted by a male first cousin.

Biography

Thomas Felps was born near the Bodkin Bay in Anne Arundel County, Maryland[1]

The 1699 tax list for the Spesutia Hundreds of Baltimore Co. MD showed: "Samuel Browne" [names listed immediately below Browne] Edward Cantwell, Edward Woolldy, Thomas Felps and 1 slave. p. 1. (Clark & Clark 1964) This record suggests that Samuel Brown had 3 men living on his plantation and aforesaid Browne owned 1 slave[2]

Thomas Felps lived and worked on the Browne plantation as well as several other plantations during the years of 1699 to 1706, and thereafter no records have been found for Thomas Felps in Baltimore County until 1721. Spesutia Hundreds Tax Lists of St. George's Parish, Baltimore County

It also appears that said Felps was building tobacco barns and providing other carpentry work on the various plantations he was living on during the years 1699 to 1706. The Parris Indenture suggests that Thomas could also read and write in 1729.[4]

March 1715 and Nov.1717 Mary Arden named Thomas Felps as the father of her children.

May 2, 1721 Cadwallider Jones, planter, of Baltimore Co., to Thomas Felps, planter, of same, 1,500 pounds of tobacco, 50 acres....north side of Deer creek, Signed Cadwallider (x) Jones. Wit: John (x) Duly and Thomas Knight. May 2, 1721 Thomas Felps records his branding mark. [5]

Aug. 26, 1738: VESTRY PROCEEDINGS -------------- "Thomas Felps and Mark Ford being summoned to appear at the vestry, did appear and both of them declared to the vestry that they have been married to her that is next called Rose Felps. Swift was first married unto her and she eloped from said Swift and after said Felps declares that he was married unto her the said Rose Swift on the 28th day of May 1710."

However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

Phelps-7627 and Felps-146 are not ready to be merged because: Doubtful that both of these profiles represent the same person. Per their differential birth dates they possibly were a generation apart. Careful investigation should be applied to sort out spousal and descendancy relationships before a merge is considered.

Phelps-7627 and Felps-146 appear to represent the same person because: These are a clear duplicate, the second one has no sources, so no idea where the dates came from.
Felps-79 and Phelps-3337 appear to represent the same person because: Similar names, similar derails
